Biography

Melanie graduated from the Food Science and Human Nutrition undergraduate program at Ourimbah in 2014 and continued with an Honours year doing Pancreatic Cancer Biology research. Her strong interest in human biology, health, and disease is what drew her to this project, and after successful completion and award of a Faculty of Science medal, Melanie continued working in the Pancreatic Cancer Research Group, Ourimbah for a few years before changing career direction to working within the food industry in 2019.

Melanie's research interests have shifted toward consumer behaviour, nutrition, and translating this with industry.

"Our health and the etiology of disease is greatly impacted by what we eat and drink."

"I am fascinated about what makes us choose the foods and beverages that we consume, and what influences us to adapt those choices."

Melanie's current PhD project is focused on better understanding consumer perception and behaviour towards lower alcohol wines.

"Drinking habits in Australia have changed and led to consumer behaviour toward moderate and responsible alcohol intake. Rising trends in health and wellbeing has increased the demand for healthier alcoholic alternatives and is driving innovation in alcoholic beverages. However, there is very little known in the non and lower alcohol wine category about what influences the wine consumer to purchase and consume these wines."

In addition to her research work, Melanie also has a strong track record of teaching within multiple programs at UON. She is currently a casual teaching academic within the Bachelor of Food Science and Human Nutrition program and previously held casual positions within the Bachelor of Food Science and Human Nutrition, and English Language & Foundation Studies programs.
