Career Summary

Linda Walsh is a graduate in oboe performance of the Canberra School of Music. With the award of a Swiss Government Scholarship in 1985, she continued her postgraduate studies in Switzerland under Professor Hans Elhorst in Berne and Louise Pellerin in Zürich. An award from the Albert Roussel Foundation in Paris led to a very inspiring period of study with renowned French oboist Maurice Bourgue. Linda joined the Basel Sinfonietta in 1986 and performed throughout France, Germany and Switzerland.

Returning to Australia in 1987, Linda joined the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and over the following five years took part in three international tours and numerous recording projects with artists such as Sir Charles Mackerras, Frans Bruggen, Barry Tuckwell and Joshua Bell. Linda was also a founding member of Sydney Alpha Ensemble specialising in contemporary music. In 1998, Linda presented a recital of Australian repertoire for solo oboe at the International Double Reed Society Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. More recently, freelance engagements with the Sydney Symphony and Australian Opera Orchestras are part of a busy schedule which also includes solo recitals, chamber music concerts and radio broadcasts.

Linda Walsh is one of Australia's most highly regarded oboe teachers. She taught at Sydney Conservatorium of Music for eleven years from 1988, joining the staff at the University of Newcastle in 1996. Publications include a multi-lingual instructional DVD on oboe reed making in 2008, and a series of music videos incorporating live performance in 2009 which were presented in Birmingham at the Conference of the International Double Reed Society. Current research interests include multimedia interactive performance and computer based composition, the topic of her PhD studies at the University of Technology, Sydney. In 2012 she was a guest artist at the Sonic Arts Research Centre in Belfast, and a featured artist at the 2014 NIME conference in London. Linda currently holds the position of Senior Lecturer in the School of Creative Arts, University of Newcastle.
