Looking beyond the surface of physics

A physicist with a research income in excess of $18.7 million, 50 Research students and almost 200 refereed publications, Professor John O’Connor doesn’t narrow his focus when it comes to research.

Professor John O'Connor

Since joining UON in 1981, John has collaborated across the University and the globe in a broad range of spheres; from surface and medical physics to science communications. Awarded a Doctor of Science from ANU in 1999, and the recipient of the Australian Institute of Physics Award for Outstanding Service to Physics John’s vast contributions to the field have not gone unrecognised or unrewarded.

While his main speciality is materials science and surface physics, this Professor of Physics has an unquenchable interest in collaborative research and sharing his knowledge with others. Over his 35+ years at UON, John has developed a range of tools and techniques to benefit other surface and medical physicists; identifying and measuring holes in existing data.

John’s work from the 1980s and 90s has led to the development of data which will guide the second generation of hadron therapy research. Hadron therapy is the medical use of high energy particles rather than Xrays  to treat cancer.  Although Australia has yet to invest in hadron therapy, there are currently over 50 facilities world-wide with another 25 under construction.  In the first generation of facilities  protons were used, but there is a growing movement to the use of  carbon as a second generation approach, which is where John’s work into the slowing down process of projectiles will come into its own by using energy loss and variability as predictors for this treatment.

Science and Engineering communication

A passion for science outreach and communication led to John’s work in helping set up Newcastle’s Supernova Hands-on Science Centre with Professor Tim Roberts in the late 1970s, an early involvement in the establishment of Canberra’s Questacon, setting up the SMART program and establishing the Science and Engineering Challenge, a national outreach initiative that won the Sir William Hudson award for Outstanding Engineering Excellence in 2003.

Over his 35+ years at UON, Professor O’Connor has developed a range of tools and techniques to benefit other surface and medical physicists; identifying and measuring holes in existing data.

For over 17 years, the Challenge has inspired generations of year 10 students into further study into mathematics, science and engineering. In fact, data collected over the life of the program has revealed that this successful outreach initiative has led to a very positive impact on enrolment in higher education in the science, mathematics and engineering fields at UON.

Sharing his passion for science has led to regular radio appearances, and, excitingly, an appearance on stage with author Douglas Adams, author of Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy for Science in the Pub – bringing the wonders of science to the public.

Close collaborations from Newcastle to China

International collaboration is an ongoing theme of John’s career. He has been working on new advanced materials which are resistant to radiation damage likely to be experienced in nuclear reactors with a team from Fudan University, where  the primary focus is on finding new advanced materials for nuclear fusion reactors.  The prototype fusion reactor is being built in France at present by a multinational consortium of leading science countries but future power generation reactors will need better materials.

How physics can address climate change

One of the most complex situations that society is currently facing is climate change and we need to look to alternative energy methods to address this. “Fusion is a solution to climate change, but we’re not investing enough in its research. Nuclear fusion doesn’t produce radioactive material: its waste product is helium which is so safe that it is used in party balloons. ” says John. “Fusion is a complex procedure, and is more difficult to create than fission. With fusion you have to produce something here on earth that occurs in the core of the sun. This is clean, baseload energy that we could use in conjunction with solar and other renewable sources.”

“In the 1980s they worked out a roadmap for producing energy from fusion by the year 2000, and they worked out how much it would cost. At the moment, the world’s major countries are participating in The International Thermo-nuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), a $16 billion project, which will build the world’s biggest fusion reactor in France by 2025. The total amount of money that it will cost is the same as if we’d started back in the 1980s, but the oil crisis came to a halt and they stopped investing in the project. But fusion’s the energy of the future.”

Another international collaboration is with a colleague from Imperial College working on their Low Energy Ion Scattering (LEIS) instrument which is ideally suited to measuring the surface atomic layer composition of materials.  This machine was also used in collaboration with UON to make measurements with Rob Atkin, Director of the Priority Research Centre for Advanced Fluids and Interfaces, and his PhD student looking at the surface atomic layer composition of the ionic liquids and deep eutectic liquids.

With an infectious passion for science, John has, through his teaching, research and science communication outreach,  inspired a new generation of curious minds intent on disruptive technology.

Career Summary

Biography

Research Expertise
Principal research experience is in materials analysis (editor of "Surface Analysis Methods in Materials Science") with particular emphasis on ion beam techniques ranging from 100eV to 1GeV. These tools have been applied to study the structure and composition of the first few atomic layers of materials. In the areas of low energy (0.1 - 10keV) and medium energy (50 - 200keV) I have a recognised international standing reflected in conference organisation, publication and research grant reviewing. I have made fundamentally contributions to the development of reliable interatomic potentials (most highly cited paper with over 150 citations) which has been recognised as the most valuable contribution to reliable computer simulation. In some groups the conclusion I arrived at is termed the OConnor potential. A second growing area of research interest is in the field of science communication and outreach. I have been involved in this activity alongside my research for my whole career but my main concern has been that there has not been sufficient attention paid to measuring and optimising the effectiveness of such activities. With a PhD student I commenced a project on this which developed into a broader involvement. In 2001, I brought together the AIP (of which I was president at the time), the RACI, Engineers Australia and the Australian Council of Mathematical Societies to highlight to the Federal Government the declining participation in senior secondary school chemistry, physics and mathematics. This has developed into the current DEST focus on these enabling sciences. At the same time we developed (at University of Newcastle) the Science and Engineering Challenge which won the Sir William Hudson award for Engineering Excellence in 2003. This program has been funded by DEST for $1.8M to take it Australia wide. In 2002 Institute of Physics (UK) awared me (with T Burns and R Nelson) the Public Awareness of Physics Award recognising not only the Science and Engineering Challenge but other activities in this area of endeavour. Further research in science and engineering outreach is being undertaken through an ARC Linkage Project with Engineers Australia and Ampcontrol. My publications have an average 13 citations per paper and my Hirsch index is currently 21. I have presented 5 invited presentation at national and international conferences in the past 5 years.

Teaching Expertise
I have taught a broad range of courses from first year to postgraduate in physics with excellent feedback from students. At present my administrative load precludes me undertaking a heavy teaching load but I have elected to retain two of the most challenging courses which is a Sports Physics course, and an Honours Physics course. My recognised teaching ability lead to my appointment to the foundation Teaching Committee (in 1992) at the University of Newcastle, my ongoing appointment to the Avondale College Bachelor of Science Degree Advisory Committee (1992 present) and my appointment to the program committee of the University of Newcastle Practical Tertiary Teaching Program (2003 present) for academics. I have been a member of the NSW HSC Physics Examination panel and I was a member of the steering committee (involving the Department of Education, NSW Science Teachers Association and the AIP) for the production of a Secondary School Physics Laboratory Manual Getting it to Work - Physics Equipment for High Schools I have also held the following posts: 1997-1999 External Examiner for M.Sc. (Materials Science) at the Hong Kong University. 2003 Member, Prime Ministers Science Engineering and Innovation Council Working Group on Science Awareness and Education. 2004 Member, Expert Advisory Panel, AUTC Project into Physics Teaching Outcomes and Curriculum Development 2004 Member of reference group to advise DEST on implementing the recommendations of the review Australias Teachers: Australias Future Advancing Innovation, Science, Technology and Mathematics.

Administrative Expertise
From 1991 to 1997 I was Head of the Department of Physics which, under a restructure, became the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences of which I have been head since 2002. I have been President of the Australian Institute of Physics and Secretary of the Federation of Australian Scientific and Technological Societies. As secretary of the Vacuum Society of Australia I served in two capacities on the Council of the International Union of Vacuum, Science and Technologies Association over a period of nine years.

A new family of ternary nano-laminated compounds, MAB phases, are studied as a promising class of neutron shielding materials for applications within fusion reactors. The shielding capacity against high-energy neutrons was evaluated, and the damage tolerance of MoAlB against Si+ irradiation was investigated over the temperature range of RT- 600 °C. The linear attenuation coefficients of these materials over wide neutron-energy ranges imply that Mo(W)AlB have a high neutron shielding capacity. MoAlB shows a strong resistance to crack formation and excellent tolerance to amorphization under higher temperatures. The detailed thermal dynamic behaviors (reaction barrier and migration barrier) associated with the defects in MoAlB were studied through DFT calculations. Also, the lattice parameter changes are related to the formation of various point defects and the defect evolution evidenced by Rietveld refinement of the GIXRD and DFT calculations. MoAlB is confirmed to be a great candidate as a neutron shielding material.

Purpose: An ideal commissioning and quality assurance (QA) program for Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) delivery systems should assess the performance of each individual dynamic component as a function of gantry angle. Procedures within such a program should also be time-efficient, independent of the delivery system and be sensitive to all types of errors. The purpose of this work is to develop a system for automated time-resolved commissioning and QA of VMAT control systems which meets these criteria. Methods: The procedures developed within this work rely solely on images obtained, using an electronic portal imaging device (EPID) without the presence of a phantom. During the delivery of specially designed VMAT test plans, EPID frames were acquired at 9.5 Hz, using a frame grabber. The set of test plans was developed to individually assess the performance of the dose delivery and multileaf collimator (MLC) control systems under varying levels of delivery complexities. An in-house software tool was developed to automatically extract features from the EPID images and evaluate the following characteristics as a function of gantry angle: dose delivery accuracy, dose rate constancy, beam profile constancy, gantry speed constancy, dynamic MLC positioning accuracy, MLC speed and acceleration constancy, and synchronization between gantry angle, MLC positioning and dose rate. Machine log files were also acquired during each delivery and subsequently compared to information extracted from EPID image frames. Results: The largest difference between measured and planned dose at any gantry angle was 0.8% which correlated with rapid changes in dose rate and gantry speed. For all other test plans, the dose delivered was within 0.25% of the planned dose for all gantry angles. Profile constancy was not found to vary with gantry angle for tests where gantry speed and dose rate were constant, however, for tests with varying dose rate and gantry speed, segments with lower dose rate and higher gantry speed exhibited less profile stability. MLC positional accuracy was not observed to be dependent on the degree of interdigitation. MLC speed was measured for each individual leaf and slower leaf speeds were shown to be compensated for by lower dose rates. The test procedures were found to be sensitive to 1 mm systematic MLC errors, 1 mm random MLC errors, 0.4 mm MLC gap errors and synchronization errors between the MLC, dose rate and gantry angle controls systems of 1. In general, parameters measured by both EPID and log files agreed with the plan, however, a greater average departure from the plan was evidenced by the EPID measurements. Conclusion: QA test plans and analysis methods have been developed to assess the performance of each dynamic component of VMAT deliveries individually and as a function of gantry angle. This methodology relies solely on time-resolved EPID imaging without the presence of a phantom and has been shown to be sensitive to a range of delivery errors. The procedures developed in this work are both comprehensive and time-efficient and can be used for streamlined commissioning and QA of VMAT delivery systems.

Multileaf collimator (MLC) positions should be precisely and independently measured as a function of gantry angle as part of a comprehensive quality assurance (QA) program for volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT). It is also ideal that such a QA program has the ability to relate MLC positional accuracy to patient-specific dosimetry in order to determine the clinical significance of any detected MLC errors. In this work we propose a method to verify individual MLC trajectories during VMAT deliveries for use as a routine linear accelerator QA tool. We also extend this method to reconstruct the 3D patient dose in the treatment planning system based on the measured MLC trajectories and the original DICOM plan file. The method relies on extracting MLC positions from EPID images acquired at 8.41fps during clinical VMAT deliveries. A gantry angle is automatically tagged to each image in order to obtain the MLC trajectories as a function of gantry angle. This analysis was performed for six clinical VMAT plans acquired at monthly intervals for three months. The measured trajectories for each delivery were compared to the MLC positions from the DICOM plan file. The maximum mean error detected was 0.07 mm and a maximum root-mean-square error was 0.8 mm for any leaf of any delivery. The sensitivity of this system was characterized by introducing random and systematic MLC errors into the test plans. It was demonstrated that the system is capable of detecting random and systematic errors on the range of 1-2mm and single leaf calibration errors of 0.5 mm. The methodology developed in the work has potential to be used for efficient routine linear accelerator MLC QA and pretreatment patient-specific QA and has the ability to relate measured MLC positional errors to 3D dosimetric errors within a patient volume.

Abstract Using the first-principles method based on density functional theory, the effect of helium irradiation on Ti3SiC2 has been investigated. It was observed that helium atoms prefer to accumulate within the layers where Si atoms have been dislodged creating 2-dimensional channels and bubbles which strongly promotes cleavage fractures between adjacent Ti-Si layers. At high temperature the He atoms diffuse out of these bubbles enabling the diffusion of the mobile Si back to their original sites and the annealing of the material back to the original structure. This behavior may play a positive role in the resistance of Ti3SiC2 to helium irradiation making it a potential candidate for future nuclear reactor applications in the future.

The radiation damage response of Ti3SiC2 heated from 120°C to 850°C during 700 keV Si+ irradiation has been investigated. The samples were analyzed using glancing incidence X-ray diffraction, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. For the sample at 120°C, irradiation results in a buildup of a heterogeneous surface and the formation of TiCx. Irradiation at 200°C results in maximum microstrain, a maximum in the c lattice parameter, and the appearance of a ß phase in addition to the normal a phase of Ti3SiC2. A minimum in the observed damage level near the surface was seen for irradiation at a sample temperature of 300°C but the damaged phase increases at higher temperatures. Differences between the present work and a previous C irradiation study have been ascribed to the enhanced Si defect transport at low temperatures.

We have studied the scattering of 50-200 eV Na+ and K+ beams and 200-2000 eV Si+ beams from Cu(lll) under angles of incidence from 1° to 20°. The Si+ beams appear to access a transient bound excited state of the SiCu(111) electronic system, resulting in adsorption or trapping of the beam for up to 5 oscillations in this potential. The particles appear to detrap from the skipping state through a combination of elastic processes and momentum transfer between the perpendicular and parallel momentum components of the beam to the surface. Direct evidence for such momentum transfer is provided by the alkali scattering data, which exhibit negligible energy loss but scattered-particle angular distributions which peak within (2 ± 1)° of the surface, independent of the angle of incidence of the beam to the surface. These data, combined with data on the scattering of O2+ from Ag(111), suggest that energetic ion beams can be adsorbed by both elastic and inelastic mechanisms into skipping states at metal surfaces. © 1990.

Purpose: To demonstrate a new method for real-time geometric and dosimetric verification of IMRT and VMAT using synchronization between predicted and measured EPID images. Methods: Predicted EPID images were calculated using a comprehensive physics-based model. Each predicted image represents the integrated signal expected from the delivery between control points. The measured images are acquired in cine mode and compared to the set of predicted images in real-time. The system performs geometric verification prior to dosimetric verification. When the measured image is acquired, the algorithm automatically detects the MLC leaf positions. A comparison between the leaf positions of the measured image and control points in the MLC file is made using the cosine similarity technique. The similarity index(SI) provides geometric MLC verification and synchronization between the measured and predicted images, as a uniform dose-rate cannot be assumed for IMRT or VMAT deliveries. The SI threshold was based on a series of experiments including 21 dynamic-IMRT fields defining pass/fail boundary(5 brain, 8 H&N, and 8 prostate cases). If geometric verification is successful, dosimetic verification is performed with the Gamma comparison(3%,3mm).The system reports the verification Result in real-time. Results: The system was simulated by MATLAB/SIMULINK and detected geometric and dosimetric errors during delivery. Both artificially introduced errors and clinical data were used for testing and analysis of the system performance. For a tested prostate field, the cumulative dose comparisons showed the minimum and maximum number of points with Gamma index<1 as 93.5% and 98.5%, respectively. For individual dose comparisons on the same field, the values were 87% and 97%, respectively. Conclusion: This method includes automatic MLC leaf positioning, synchronization, and dosimetric verification. The pass/fail boundary of geometry was calculated based on the experiments. This system is a useful approach to detect unexpected possible errors occurring in the clinical setting and to prevent patient overdoses during radiotherapy especially in complex deliveries such as arc-IMRT. © 2012, American Association of Physicists in Medicine. Purpose: A cine-EPID based method to separately measure the mechanical motion characteristics of gantry, jaws and multi-leaf collimator as a function of gantry angle during VMAT has been developed. Methods: Irradiations were performed using 6 MV beams of a Varian Trilogy linear accelerator with an aS1000 EPID. Images were acquired using 360 MU irradiations at 600 MU/min in cine acquisition mode at 2 Hz frame-rate. To establish the gantry isocentre, a Winston-Lutz technique was used with a circular collimator rigidly attached to the gantry head. The displacement of the centre of a fixed tungsten ball at isocentre from the field centre was determined on each image with a sub-pixel thresholding technique. EPID coordinates were transformed to room coordinates. Jaw and MLC sag relative to the gantry head were determined from the displacement of a gantry-mounted tungsten ball relative to static jaw and MLC positions. MLC speed constancy was determined by segmenting MLC positions on each image for a constant leaf-speed test pattern. Gantry speed constancy was assessed with an independent liquid-based inclinometer and the linac gantry angle potentiometer. Results: The gantry isocentre was ~ 1 mm amplitude with changes in isocentre occuring over time suggesting frequent measurement is required. Jaw sag was found to be very small ~ 0.2 mm amplitude, with MLC sag ~ 0.6 mm. Average leaf speed was found to be consistent for the MLC leaves however the variation in speed varied systematically across the leaf bank which requires further investigation. Gantry speed was consistent although the inclinometer was found to lag ~ 2 degrees in reading from the potentiometer. Conclusions: The cine-EPID based method quantifies the mechanical motion characteristics of the linac as a function of gantry angle during arc-therapy with improved precision and efficiency of quality assurance over previous methods. © 2011, American Association of Physicists in Medicine. The backscattered radiation from the support arm of Varian a-Si EPIDs can affect the accuracy of dosimetric measurements using these devices. In this study the effect of insertion of lead sheets between the EPID and the arm has been investigated for the E-type arms. The optimum lead thickness was determined by comparison of the imager response on and off the arm with increasing lead thicknesses and 2 mm of lead was selected as the optimal thickness considering the reasonable extra weight added to the imager. It reduced the arm backscatter from a maximum of about 6% and 3.5% higher than the off-arm signal in 6 MV and 18 MV beams to about 2% for both energies. On-axis EPID response measurements for different field sizes showed a considerable decrease in arm backscatter with the addition of lead. The symmetry improved for the largest field from about 105% and 103% to 101% and 100% using 2 mm lead. Changing the SDD did not affect the backscatter component more than 1%. The addition of lead decreased the contrast-to-noise ratio and resolution by 1.3% and 0.8% for 6 MV and by 0.5% and 0.4% for 18 MV beams. The root mean square deviation for the difference in EPID central pixel position with and without lead during a whole gantry rotation was one pixel at maximum. In conclusion a 2 mm thick lead layer seems sufficient for acceptable dosimetry results with no major degradation to the routine performance of the imager. © 2010, American Association of Physicists in Medicine. Over the past 25-30 years, Australia has experienced a significant decline in the percentage of senior secondary school students electing to study the enabling sciences and higher level mathematics that are the career pre-requisites for Engineering and Science. Without arresting this decline and increasing the size of this 'pool' of students, there can be no significant improvement in the present situation. The Australian "Science and Engineering Challenge" has grown from small beginnings in New South Wales in 2000 as a secondary school outreach program for the Faculties of Engineering and Science at the University of Newcastle. Supported by the Australian Federal Government and industry with 27 partner universities, numerous Rotary Clubs and an army of thousands of volunteers (including retired professional scientists and engineers) it reaches 18,000+ year 9 and 10 secondary students each year in 40 venues across the nation. It is the largest national outreach program for secondary students and is managed by the University of Newcastle. Whilst the underlying goal is to increase the national pool of science and mathematics 'enabled' year 12 students, the immediate goal of the program each day is to implant a seed in the minds of the students who compete in fun-filled activities based on sound science and mathematics principles. The 'seed' is that, scientists and engineers actually do interesting and challenging things and to instill a positive mental image that "I too could become a scientist or an engineer!" The range of activities available in a typical Challenge event are demonstrated as is the operational structure that sees regional competitions leading annually to a national competitive event for outstanding secondary schools. The real impact on the decisions students make in their final year 12 subject selections in the enabling sciences are also demonstrated.
