Career Summary

Biography

My name is Johan Dahlin and I was born in Enköping, Sweden in 1986. In June 2011, I received a MSc degree in Engineering Physics with majors in Mathematical Statistics and Risk Management, as well as a BSc degree in Economics with additional coursework in Business Administration and Law, both from Umeå University.

In May 2014, I received a Licentiate's degree in Automatic Control from Linköping University. During the autumn of 2014, I visited Prof. Robert Kohn at the Department of Economics, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. In May 2016, I received my PhD in Automatic Control from Linköping University based on the thesis Accelerating Monte Carlo methods for Bayesian inference in dynamical models.

Since then, I have held positions as a researcher in both academia and industry focusing on applying Machine Learning to among other things help medical doctors to find cancers in MRI and CT-scans, searching through disaster areas after survivors in the least amount of time.

Research interests

I am passionate about finding hidden patterns and trends in data such as numbers, images and documents to learn more about medicine, economics and society at large. During my PhD studies, I spent five years learning and developing more efficient algorithms for Statistics and Machine Learning. I now aim to make use of my expertise to improve the world in terms of health care, medicine and the environment. I believe that learning from data is essential in this quest by enabling improved data-driven decision making and forecasting.

The results from my research during my PhD studies and subsequent Postdoctoral work can be applied in many scientific fields as well as in many different industries. For an overview of my research, please see my personal webpage.

Developed algorithms for active learning of spatial statistical models known as log-Gaussian Cox processes. The

work combined methods and models from spatial statistics with modern Machine learning algorithms based on

Bayesian optimisation and reinforcement learning. The main motivating application for this work was to find

survivors in disaster areas after e.g., floods and earthquakes.
