Career Summary
Biography
I have worked in academic and professional roles at the University of Newcastle since 2001, and have tutored and guest lectured in Australian History since 2008. As someone who champions life long learning, I value my previous work as a teacher and educator in the vocational and secondary school systems.
In my professional role as a research assistant, I have worked in various roles across many organisations, faculties and schools. These include projects examining the educational and sociological aspects of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, historical and archival research for the Global Newcastle Research Network, and research projects undertaken by the Faculty of Health and Medicine: the Hunter Community Study, Aged Care Needs Assessment Study, Fractured Neck of Femur Study, and the Study into the Health of Aircraft Maintenance Personnel.
My doctoral thesis (History), Within reach, beyond care: an examination of medical care during the Papuan (Kokoda) Campaign 1942-43 through the lens of the Australian Field Ambulance, built on my History Honours thesis, A Soldier's Diary: History's First Draft. Both works examined the experiences of front line medical units, while also exploring the subject of military medicine more broadly, and considering historiographical and popular representations of Kokoda. I continue to explore military medical history via research for journal articles and conference presentations.
My book Shadows On The Track: Australia's Medical War in Papua 1942 - 1943 (Newport, NSW: Big Sky Publishing / Australian Army History Unit) was published in February 2019.
