Dr Garry Hutchinson
University of Newcastle Department of Rural Health
Garry has had a long career in clinical General Practice, both in the private and public sector.
He has worked as a private General Practitioner in Sydney, and in a rural setting in Byron Bay. The experience in Byron Bay involved more isolated practice with emergency and retrieval as well as the eclectic world that is generalist medicine.
Garry began his career training and working in Psychiatry at Concord and St Vincents Hospitals in Sydney. This experience is now valuable in coordinating and teaching the Psychiatry component of our 5th year undergraduate course locally.
He spent some six years as a medical officer working for the Royal Australian Navy where he trained in Diving Medicine at the RAN School of Underwater Medicine. As well as Military Medicine, experience in Occupational Medicine and Sports Medicine was gained.
This varied career means that Garry can teach into a variety of areas in our JMP course. He teaches Psychiatry, as well as tutoring in Surgery via the SDS topics. He also coordinates the local 4th year WACH course, assisting with tutorials.
The role of Clinical Dean broadens responsibilities beyond clinical teaching to administration and management as well as sitting on various committees within the JMP.
