Organisation: Blackwell Publishers Description: This work has now been published by Blackwells in hardback format. ISBN: 9781405102162 The letter of invitation is included below: Date: Wed, 16 Jul 2003 22:02:59 -0400 From: John Marincola Subject: Invitation X-Sender: jmm10@pop.nyu.edu To: Elizabeth Baynham Dear Professor Baynham: I have been commissioned by Blackwell Publishers to produce for them a Companion to Greek &Roman Historiography, and I am writing to invite you to contribute to this volume. The Companion, which will be a large volume (250,000 words, ca. 600 pages), is expected to appear in late 2005, and will be published in both hardcover and paperback. My aim in the volume is to bring together the very best scholars who have worked on Greek and Roman historiography over the past thirty years. I have chosen contributors because I admire their work and I think that they have something fresh to say; I believe, moreover, that they can write in a way that is accessible to classical scholars, to scholars in other disciplines (especially non-ancient history), and to the interested general reader. I would like the volume to be a first port of call for those interested in the historiography of the classical world. To that end I have designed the volume to convey a variety of approaches to classical historiography: there will be survey articles, essays on various larger themes in the writing of Greek and Roman historiography, new interpretative readings of individual works or parts of individual works, and treatments of those genres that bordered on and influenced history. Given your own expertise, and your wonderful recent book on Curtius, I am very much hoping that you would be willing to contribute an interpretative reading on Curtius. These readings will be about 3,000 in length, and they present the writer's take on a historical work or on a section of a work (e.g., Books 21-30 of Livy on the Hannibalic War) or on some salient aspect of a work. One may go in whatever direction one likes, and the goal is to say something interesting and thought-provoking. Perhaps something like (and I submit this purely exempli gratia) Curtius on the Good King. But it would really be your choice. I am hoping that contributors will be able to produce their chapters by 1 January 2005. Contributors will receive US$75, along with one copy of the hardcover volume and two of the paperback. I do very much hope that you will be able to contribute to the volume. Please let me know whether or not you are interested. With all good wishes, Yours sincerely, John Marincola
