Career Summary


Deidre Brollo is an artist who works primarily with artist’s books, printmedia and installation. Her work explores the intersection of memory, perception and art, examining ways in which individual remembrance can be bound into the viewing experience. She holds a PhD and first class Honours from Sydney College of the Arts, the University of Sydney, and a BVA from the University of Newcastle. Her PhD was awarded in 2007 for her thesis, Memory, Perception & the Art of Seeing Double, and accompanying exhibition, the return room.

Her work has been exhibited in solo and group shows in Australia, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, France and South Korea, and is represented in the collections of the National Library of Australia, the State Library of Queensland, Geelong Gallery, Burnie Regional Art Gallery, Southern Cross University, and Manly Library. In 2007 she was Visiting Artist at National Art School, Sydney, and also curated Noosa Regional Gallery’s artist’s book symposium, the theme of which, The Artist’s Book and the Search for the Impossible, provided a framework within which to explore encyclopaedic notions of the book. Her work has won a number of awards, most recently the Non-Acquisitive Prize at the 2013 Fremantle Art Centre Print Award.

Through both creative practice and writing, Deidre Brollo’s research broadly investigates the areas of memory, perception and temporality in relation to the making and viewing of art. Her PhD - composed of a thesis, 'Memory, Perception & the Art of Seeing Double,' and exhibition, 'the return room' - investigated ways in which individual remembrance can be bound into the viewing experience. Drawing on the writings of Henri Bergson and Marcel Proust, she argued that perception is inherently bound up with memory, and as a result, that all artworks have the potential to elicit acts of recollection in the viewer, in which individual recollection is brought to bear upon the artwork, a process of "seeing double." The exhibition 'the return room' consisted of an installation of artists’ books in a specially constructed room reminiscent of both a domestic and a gallery space. It drew on the idea of the palimpsest as a site in which other traces are visible, while also having the potential to be read as a form of reconceptualised memory theatre, a space for the provocation of involuntary memory. This approach to the artwork, as an active object that holds mnemonic possibilities, has been further explored in relation to the artist’s book. Both within her own work and contemporary practice more broadly, her research draws attention to the ways in which artists seek to engage the viewer’s haptic memory and perception. Such provocation of ‘bodily memory’ is seen as means of co-opting the viewer’s own recollections as part of the process of meaning creation. Further research has considered the encounter between printmedia and photography, and explored the problematic relationship these forms have to both memory and forgetting. Referencing an early critique of photography from Marcel Proust, which characterises the photograph as a flattened snapshot snatched from the temporal flux, her work has sought to examine the ways in which print techniques can de-stabilise the photographic moment, to reassert photography's material and temporal depth.
