Career Summary

Biography

Dr Cristelle Maurin is a Research Fellow at the International Centre for Balanced Land Use (ICBLU). ICBLU was established in 2016 as a joint initiative between The University of Newcastle and the New South Wales Government to provide independent, evidence based research to address the challenges concerning energy, water and food security and the sustainable use of, and equitable access to, land resources. ICBLU harnesses research from disciplines such as engineering, environmental science, agriculture, anthropology, law and business across The University of Newcastle to provide integrated research solutions and educational services to better understand, support and drive systemic change towards sustainable land use in Australia and globally.

Cristelle has a background in law and international development. She leads ICBLU’s work program on Land Governance and the Sustainable Development Goals, and its Food Futures Lab. Cristelle’s work sits at the interface between land resource governance, global economic governance and sustainable development. Her research expertise spans international law, human rights law, investment and trade, environmental law and governance, and social development. Cristelle conducts and supervises research, designs research and teaching programs, and provides advisory support on law and governance issues.

Past Experience

Cristelle has a PhD in International Law (University of Paris Pantheon-Sorbonne, 2011). Before joining The University of Newcastle, she was Research Associate at UCL International Energy Policy Institute, University College London, and Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Chinese Studies, University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. Prior to academia, Cristelle worked in international development in various management and advisory roles in East / South East Asia, West Africa and the Pacific Region, including with the International Labour Organisation (UN ILO) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community.
