Biography

Dr Cristelle Maurin is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the International Centre for Balanced Land Use (ICBLU). ICBLU was established in 2016 as a joint initiative between The University of Newcastle (UoN) and the New South Wales Government. Cristelle contributes to ICBLU’s research and teaching programmes on land and resource governance, sustainability transitions and food systems.

Cristelle has a PhD in International Law (University of Paris Pantheon-Sorbonne, 2011). She was a Research Associate at University College London’s International Energy Policy Institute from 2014 to 2016. Prior to that, she was Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Paris Pantheon-Sorbonne’s Centre for European and International Law (2008-2011) and Visiting Fellow at the University of Stellenbosch’s Centre for Chinese Studies (2012-2013). Cristelle has vast experience working with governments, local communities and civil society organisations. Prior to academia, she held several positions in intergovernmental organisations in East Asia, West Africa and the Pacific Region. Her professional backrgound includes the management of aid programmes, advising governments on policy and legal reforms, and working with communities on social mobilisation programmes. From 2003 to 2008, she worked for the United-Nations’ International Labour Organisation in West Africa, Indonesia and China. As a legal consultant, Cristelle also worked for the Secretariat of the Pacific Community on the sustainable governance of offshore mineral resources in the South Pacific Region.
