Biography

Dr Cristelle Maurin is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the International Centre for Balanced Land Use (ICBLU). ICBLU was established in 2016 as a joint initiative between The University of Newcastle and the New South Wales Government to provide independent, evidence based research to address the global challenges concerning energy, water and food security and the sustainable use and equitable access to land and natural resources. ICBLU harnesses research from disciplines such as engineering, environmental science, law, agriculture and sociology across the University of Newcastle, and its partnerships with industry and government, to provide integrated research solutions and educational services to better understand, support and drive systemic change towards sustainable and balanced land use.

With expertise in law and development, Cristelle contributes to ICBLU research and teaching programs on land and resource governance, sustainability transitions and food systems.

Background

Cristelle has a PhD in International Law (University of Paris Pantheon-Sorbonne, 2011). She was a Research Associate at University College London, International Energy Policy Institute from 2014 to 2016. Prior to that, she was doctoral candidate and research associate at the University Paris Pantheon-Sorbonne, Centre for European and International Law and visiting fellow at the University of Stellenbosch, Centre for Chinese Studies. Prior to academia, Cristelle worked in international development in East Asia, West Africa and the Pacific Region, including with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community. Her research and work experience spans the legal reforms of onshore and offshore mineral regimes, natural resource governance frameworks, impact assessment, the development of mechanisms and legislation to foster effective participation and stakeholder engagement in decision-making processes, international human rights law and investment law.
