The Wollotuka Institute operates across all University of Newcastle campuses located on different Aboriginal countries on the east coast of Australia.
Our team at all campuses provides a culturally welcoming and safe environment for our Nguraki (Elders), students, staff and community members. Our team also plays a pivotal role in passing on cultural guidance and increasing knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education to the wider campus community.
Newcastle Campus at Callaghan - Awabakal Country
The Wollotuka Institute is located in the Birabahn Building, on the traditional lands of the Pambalong Clan of the Awabakal people.
Our building is a uniquely designed learning space that incorporates aspects of Indigenous practices and culture. The design of the building resembles the motifs of the Eaglehawk, which has special significance to the Awabakal people. These traditions and cultural practices remain the core of the Wollotuka Institute and the University of Newcastle.
Our Callaghan campus is a central hub for education, humanities, social science and the rapidly growing field of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM), as well as nursing and health.
This central location offers endless opportunities to engage with industry leaders in your field of study, while developing practical skills through work-integrated learning.

Central Coast Campus at Ourimbah - Darkinung Country
The Wollotuka Institute is located in the Library (Information Resource Centre), on the traditional lands of the Darkinung people.
Our location is traditionally known as a meeting place and a place of teaching, learning and ceremony for the Darkinung people and the bordering Aboriginal countries. These traditions remain the core of the Wollotuka Institute and the University of Newcastle. Darkinung country is interconnected by creeks, bounded by swamps, rivers, lakes and ocean and is abundant with coastal life. Our country is rich in history and the land and the water are the essence of Darkinung culture.
Our campus is proud to celebrate over 30 years of world-class teaching, learning and research – offering a broad range of specialised degrees and excellent student support services. The social, community-based learning hub inspires local students to make a difference on a global scale. The flexible study options available, exclusively at the Central Coast campus take advantage of local industries. With a particular focus on education, humanities and social sciences, as well as nursing, nutrition, exercise & sport sciences, oral health and podiatry.

The Wollotuka Institute is located in EG-02, on the traditional lands of the Birpai people.
Although the Wollotuka room may not always be staffed by a Student Advancement Officer or our Cultural Mentor, the room will always be available for you to use. You will just need to pop in next door to see Security and they can open it up for you.
