Next week, UON will welcome President’s Visiting Fellow Dr Pavel Ovseiko from the University of Oxford. Dr Ovseiko is a Senior Research Fellow in Health Policy and Management and comes to UON keen to share his knowledge and experience in addressing gender equality through the Athena SWAN Charter.

It has been a busy couple of weeks across UON in the design of student-facing professional services. Six concurrent work streams are looking at how we currently interact with students and what happens behind the scenes to support this work.

Last year UON joined 39 other Australian universities in the Respect. Now. Always initiative to address sexual harassment and sexual assault in university communities. As part of the University’s efforts on this important matter, I established the Sexual Misconduct Working Group in April this year with wide representation from stakeholders across the University.

As leaders across UON have been communicating to staff, the organisational review and design work is progressing at pace. Late last year, a thorough and in depth investigation of our existing structures and functions was completed, laying the ground work for defining and clarifying accountabilities and responsibilities across UON. This piece of work, referred to as a RACI matrix, is all but complete and once endorsed by the Vice-Chancellor, will be the backbone of the redesign.

2016 has been a great year for UON research. UON researchers performed strongly in both the 2017 National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and Australian Research Council (ARC) major grants rounds. This is despite strong competition for grants in a difficult funding environment.
