UON Heart Foundation 2017 Research Funding

Five UON health researchers have been awarded highly competitive Heart Foundation Australia funding to investigate the causes, treatment and prevention of heart, stroke and blood vessel disease.

Heart disease is a major cause of death in Australia, cardiovascular disease kills one Australian every 12 minutes. Nine in 10 adult Australians have at least one lifestyle factors for cardiovascular disease such as excess weight, poor diet, alcohol and smoking.

Our researchers are working to reduce the risks of heart disease and help improve the health of Australians.

Congratulations to the following researchers.

Future Leader Fellowships support cardiovascular researchers as they build their research capacity and become leaders of research groups. UON has been awarded two Future Leadership Fellowships for the following research:

Associate Professor Coralie English “Sit less, move more after stroke.”

Associate Professor Luke Wolfenden “Improving research translation to improve heart health.”

Postdoctoral Fellowships encourage and support early-career cardiovascular researchers to develop research skills and independence. These fellowships help researchers further their career as they become more competitive for future funding from a range of sources.

Dr Ashleigh Guillaumier “Healthy living after stroke: an online secondary prevention program for stroke survivors.”

Australian Indigenous scholarships designed to encourage and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to undertake research, and build the workforce in this area. The aim is to also positively impact on the health of Indigenous Australians.

Mrs Michelle Bovill “Culturally responsive approaches for the empowerment of Aboriginal women in smoking cessation care.

NSW CVRN Collaborative Project Grants stimulate, fund and support new collaborative research proposals from current NSW CVRN members.

Associate Professor Mitch Duncan “Improving understanding of Sleep. Physical Activity and Diet as CVD risk factors.”

The Heart Foundation is a national leader into causes, treatment and prevention of heart disease, and has invested more than $520 million towards heart research since 1959.

The 2017 Research funding round has a total value of $16.9 million.
