University welcomes US Fulbright scholar to investigate factors affecting women’s health
Set to investigate factors that affect women’s health, Dr Michael Hendryx was officially welcomed to the University of Newcastle today as the 2019 US Fulbright Distinguished Chair Scholar.
Visiting from Indiana University’s Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, Dr Hendryx will spend six months collaborating with researchers from the University of Newcastle’s Priority Research Centre for Generational Health and Ageing to examine the interrelated effects of environmental, social, behavioural and economic influences on women’s health at various life stages.
Dr Hendryx will also study birth defects in babies born to Australian women in relation to environmental variables and other risks.
His research career spans from a focus on health services delivery issues to the health impact of coal mining exposure, and environmental policy.
Sponsored by the University of Newcastle - a reflection of its commitment to support world-class research, the annual Fulbright Distinguished Chair Scholarship enables an exceptional US associate to undertake research at the University in a priority area.
In conjunction with the Fulbright Program, three University of Newcastle researchers, Dr Julie McIntyre, Professor Scott Donne and Professor Philip Dwyer, were awarded the Fulbright Senior Scholarship and will visit the US this year.
The Fulbright Program is the flagship foreign exchange scholarship program of the USA, aimed at increasing binational research collaboration, cultural understanding, and the exchange of ideas.
