Prestigious nomination for international student
University of Newcastle student, Elizabeth Fradgley is a finalist in the prestigious NSW International Student of the Year Awards, last won by University of Newcastle Bachelor of Medicine student Mohamed Ehsan Ebrahim.
One of 72,000 international students studying in NSW, Ms Fragley is committed to improving the wellbeing of individuals with chronic illness through her postgraduate research and personal volunteering efforts.
Volunteers from multiple health-related organisations, such as the Cancer Council of Australia and Hunter Medical Research Institute are approached to review Ms Fradgley's research aims and participate in patient recruitment and interactive data collection. By creating multiple volunteer opportunities within an academic project, Ms Fradgley has bridged the gap between university research activities and the community.
In a voluntary capacity, Ms Fradgley facilitates a monthly support group for community members with Intestinal Bowel Disorders with the support of Crohn's and Colitis Australia. She also volunteers her time providing advocacy and coordinating awareness-raising and fundraising activities towards the establishment of a local chapter of the organisation.
The Premier's NSW International Student of the Year Awards are an initiative of the NSW Government to publicly recognise the contribution and achievements of outstanding international students in NSW. The awards are made in the categories of schools, vocational education and training, higher education and ELICOS (English language intensive courses for overseas students).
Winners will be announced at the Sydney Opera House on Thursday, 10 October.
