The University of Newcastle’s (UON) flagship City campus has taken out the top prize at the Australian Institute of Architects’ 2018 Newcastle Architecture Awards, held on Friday 23 March.

NeW Space award

UON’s NeW Space, designed in collaboration with Melbourne-based Lyons and the Hunter’s EJE Architecture, received the top Newcastle Jury Prize as well as three further awards for Educational Architecture, Interior Architecture and Urban Design.

Chief Operating Officer, Mr Nat McGregor, said the awards were wonderful recognition of NeW Space’s innovative design and its impact on the flourishing Newcastle CBD.

“This recognition is a testament to the world-class building and its wider impacts on our communities, our students, staff and our business and industry partners,” he said.

“The University of Newcastle is forging a path of innovation in the ways in which we teach, engage and translate our world-class research. NeW Space will continue to play a key role in demonstrating new ways of learning, teaching and engaging with our communities and partners."

Officially opened last year and delivering new academic and research programs in business, law and emerging fields including creative industries, innovation and entrepreneurship, NeW Space has made an impressive mark on the region.

The jury noted the vertical campus was highly impressive and “an exemplar of design for ‘new generation’ learning, urban renewal, and of civic place making, drawing together a complex brief of interlocking educational and public spaces”.

NeW Space was supported by Australian Government funding of $30 million through the Education Investment Fund Regional Priorities Round, NSW Government funding of $25 million and an investment of $40 million from UON.
