The Wollotuka Institute will play a leading role in celebrations across the Hunter Region this NAIDOC Week, 8-15 July.

The University have sponsored the Newcastle Flag Raising Ceremony at City Hall on Monday 8 July, followed by a Solidarity concert at the Newcastle Foreshore at 10am.

The University will be represented by the Wollotuka Institute, a centre that provides cultural support to the University's Indigenous students. They will be assisting at the concert with information on how to get involved with the University.

The Wollotuka Institute will also represent the University at flag raising ceremonies, NAIDOC marches and family fun days to be held across the region during the week in Lake Macquarie, Wyong, Gosford, Port Stephens and Toronto.

"The University of Newcastle and the Wollotuka Institute are regarded as leaders in Indigenous education in Australia. We are proud to be major sponsors in NAIDOC Week activities across the region," said Leanne Holt, Director of Indigenous Student Engagement, Employment and Collaboration at the Wollotuka Institute.

The University of Newcastle will have information at all events on bridging courses, prospective student courses and other Wollotuka Institute programs to support Indigenous students.

"We hope that our presence at NAIDOC Week events will encourage prospective Indigenous students to consider tertiary study."

The University of Newcastle is a leader in providing education for Indigenous Australians. The enrolment of Indigenous students is almost double the sector average and in recent years, enrolments of Indigenous students have grown more than 20 percent.
