World class futurist and Hollywood A-lister to spearhead creative research and innovation clusters at University of Newcastle

Internationally renowned concept designer Jeff Julian has been appointed Creative Director for Research and Innovation Clusters at the University of Newcastle.

The Clusters will serve as a one-stop shop for business and the community to access the University's world-leading expertise across a spectrum of new creative industries.

University of Newcastle Deputy Vice-Chancellor - Research, Professor Nick Talley, said, "We are extremely fortunate to have attracted a creative visionary like Jeff Julian to Australia and the Hunter Region."

"Having worked at the cutting edge of the global creative and design industries, Jeff will drive the University's research into revolutionary new fields and accelerate the development of our industry-focused innovation clusters."

Californian-born Jeff Julian made his name as a freelance designer for clients such as BMW Designworks, Gucci, Rover, Rolls-Royce and Siemens before moving to a role with Oakley, where he developed several patents.

He went on to become a leading figure in the creative design field, developing content & intellectual property for global consumer brands as diverse as Apple, American Express, Adidas, Nike, BMW, Rolls Royce, Audi, Ford and Ogilvy & Mather.

Jeff has an outstanding reputation in the film industry, built from his success as part of Steven Spielberg's team of futurists for the film, "The Minority Report". He has collaborated with Hollywood A-List names Ridley Scott, the Wachowski siblings, David Fincher, Brian Singer, Warner Brothers, Dreamworks SKG, Digital Domain, Paramount Studios, Universal, Sony and Industrial Light and Magic.

Jeff was the lead creative force behind Hollywood blockbusters "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea", "Robocop", "Cloud Atlas", "World War Z", "RIPD", "Superman Returns", "I Am Legend", "I, Robot" and "Minority Report".

His work has been recognised through numerous awards, including 6 Gold CLIOs and a Visual Effects Society Award. He has a Bachelor of Science with honors in Industrial Design from the prestigious Art Centre College of Design (ACCD) in Pasadena, California.

Jeff Julian will make a special guest appearance at the Design, Interactive Technology and Green Tech (DiG) Festival and Conference to be held at the Newcastle Town Hall on 3-4 October, talking about his vision for the future of design and the development of a design hub in the Hunter.
