PhD opportunity for a business intelligence and data analytics framework for delivering gender equity in the higher education Sector.

Gender Equity PhD Opportunity

The higher education sector faces complex issues in understanding the individual institutional challenges to gender equity, and developing a robust set of policies and strategies to address them. Recent research points to systemic issues that see disparity in female academic pay, promotion, and opportunity. Key to obtaining a better understanding these systemic issues is the ability to obtain accurate data, and to be able to use this data to understand how academic employment trajectories vary over time.

An international initiative aimed at addressing gender inequity in STEM disciplines is the Athena SWAN Charter. Originating in the UK, the Charter is governed by 10 principles that encourage institutions to ensure that women are best positioned to reach their full potential. Importantly, Athena SWAN is an evaluation and accreditation framework, that is underpinned by in-depth data collection and analysis to examine on institution’s policies, practices, and workplace culture. As such, the value of this initiative is inextricably linked to the quantity and quality of the institutional data that can be accessed to inform decisions.

A fully funded PhD position is available as part of the University of Newcastle’s commitment to the Athena SWAN charter for gender equity and diversity. Applications are invited from graduates to undertake a PhD that will develop an innovative framework to enable the long term capture and analysis of institutional data. This project will focus on data that is relevant to understanding and addressing gender inequity by drawing on emerging technologies and approaches in the business intelligence sphere. The project will also provide a best practice approach to the collection, and statistical analysis, of data for enhancing gender equity in the higher education sector.

This is a targeted opportunity for women to complete a PhD in statistics and IT.

Applications are open until a suitable applicant is found. To apply you will need a strong background in data analysis and IT architecture with solid experience in data management.

Applications are open to domestic and international candidates.
