Public forum examines future of art in Newcastle
A
panel of experts will examine issues surrounding the Newcastle Art Gallery, public
funding for the arts and priorities for the expenditure of public funds in
Newcastle at the next public forum of local thinktank the Newcastle Institute on Wednesday 9 October.
Panellists will offer their expertise on a range of topics including:
- How can the city avoid failures of decision-making and resultant waste?
- Why did the community lose interest?
- Is a large major gallery what Newcastle wants or needs?
- Are sporting facilities or road repairs a better priority?
- If there are going to be public funds to support the arts, should they be spent in different ways? and
- Are there lessons for community groups seeking funding and support for their projects?
Dr Bernie Curran, UoN Foundation Executive Officer will facilitate a Q&A style panel/public discussion with the following experts:
- Gillean Shaw, Art Curator, University of Newcastle;
- Denise Frost, Art Gallery Foundation;
- Vic Levi, Chairman, Hunter Academy of Sport;
- Chris Ford, Communications Consultant & Art Patron; and
- Martin McKenzie of Octapod, representing young,alternate and emerging artists.
