2015 Hobsons Good Universities Guide
The University of Newcastle (UON) has maintained its impressive five-star ratings for socioeconomic equity and equipping students with generic skills, according to the 2015 Good Universities Guide.
The guide, produced by Hobsons, ranks and rates 39 universities across Australia in categories which include characteristics, educational experience and graduate outcomes.
Pro Vice-Chancellor Teaching and Learning, Professor Liz Burd, said the five-star result for socioeconomic equity was a testament to UON's commitment to providing access to higher education for talented students from all walks of life.
"The University of Newcastle is exceptionally proud of its track record of supporting motivated and talented students, regardless of their background or circumstances, to gain entry and succeed in higher education," Professor Burd said.
"The proportion of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds enrolled at UON is 27 per cent, significantly higher than the sector average of 17 per cent. This is a legacy of almost 50 years of commitment to excellence and equity at the University."
Graduates confirmed UON is also among the best tertiary institutions nationally for generic skills, awarding Newcastle top marks in the category.
Professor Burd said generic skills were highly sought-after characteristics in a graduate employee.
"The University is committed to ensuring our students are workforce-ready upon completing their studies.
"It is essential the teaching and learning experiences of UON students are relevant and address the needs and requirements of future employers, and generic skills are a vital component."
Professor Burd said the University's learning outcomes included a strong emphasis on generic skills such as communication, problem-solving and teamwork.
"A five-star rating is further proof UON's approach is successful in ensuring graduates' satisfaction with their tertiary education experience."
A five-star result indicates UON graduates rated the generic skills they acquired in their courses higher than graduates in similar fields from 80 per cent of other institutions.
The University also scored five-star ratings for generic skills and socioeconomic equity in the 2014 Guide.
