Newcastle climbs in THE World University Rankings
The latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings has ranked the University of Newcastle in the top 251-275 group of universities, up from 276-300 in 2012.
Nationally, UON has moved up two places since 2012 to rank ninth in the country, and the University is now the highest ranked by the THE outside a capital city in Australia.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Caroline McMillen, said UON was a young university independently ranked in the top 3% of universities in the world, and this was a great achievement.
"The University's THE ranking increase is the result of an ongoing focus to build our global performance and reputation.
"We have worked hard to build scale through collaborating with outstanding partners, recruitment of the best staff and students from across the world, and maintenance of a clear focus on our core strengths in research and education."
Professor McMillen said Australia's universities were strong international performers with many placed in the top 3-5% in the world.
"The sector's international standing is the result of strategic investment by successive governments in building a successful higher education system.
"It is imperative that Australia continues to support excellence in research and education – wherever it is located – to ensure that high performing universities in our cities and regions continue to compete on the world stage.
"The THE and other world university rankings are increasingly competitive as countries, particularly across Asia, invest significantly in their universities.
"Continuing to invest in strong universities across Australia will pay dividends in the future by enabling Australian universities to leverage important partnerships with other excellent universities across our region in this Asian century."
