UON awarded Lung Cancer Fellowship
Professor Phil Hansbro, School of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy, has been awarded a substantial grant for a co-funded Fellowship in Lung Cancer Research.
The University of Newcastle has been selected to administer the first-ever 2016-2017 Fellowship in lung cancer research.
Lung Foundation Australia Chair, Professor Christine Jenkins, announced this partnership during the Lung Foundation Awards session at the TSANZ AMS in Perth on Monday 4 April.
This fellowship is aimed to support a post-doctoral student who has recently completed their PhD studies and is looking to build on their doctoral research.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death. There are currently no effective diagnostic approaches for early detection that would enable more effective treatment.
However, the team at UON and HMRI* propose to aim for early detection by using bronchoscopy, a low-impact and safe method for detecting mutations and changes.
The Lung Foundation will make available a grant to the total value of $160,000 which will be awarded every two years with the funding of each grant being provided in two instalments of $80,000 per year.
*Professor Hansbro is based at the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) a translational medical research institute based in the Hunter.
