UON appoints first Global Innovation Chair for International Centre
Prominent Australian Geoscientist, Professor Richard Bush has become the first Global Innovation Chair to the International Centre for Balanced Land Use.
Based at the University of Newcastle's (UON) Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER), the Centre is a $1 million collaboration with New South Wales Department of Primary Industries and the Department of Industry's Division of Resources and Energy. The Centre draws together the research expertise within DPI and the University to collaborate on projects of critical importance to the growth and sustainability of NSW.
As Global Innovation Chair, Professor Bush will play a critical role in developing world-class research programs, facilitating cross-institutional collaboration and influencing national and international policy.
Professor Bush said he was honoured to have a key role in delivering balanced land use outcomes for issues now and into the future.
"I will be working hard to meet the aims this unique Centre, particularly addressing the food, water and energy security challenges we face as a State and a country. Balanced land-use management is at the heart of these complex issues and as a country we need to build a foundation for land-use based on the objectives for economic, environmental and social balance," Professor Bush said.
UON Vice-Chancellor, Professor Caroline McMillen said Professor Bush had a strong track record of developing successful research partnerships with industry, communities and government agencies.
"Professor Bush is an acknowledged leader working in a field of global significance who will drive the research priorities of the International Centre for Balanced Land Use in close consultation with government, industry and community," Professor McMillen said.
NSW Department of Primary Industry (DPI) Chief Scientist, Dr Philip Wright, said Professor Bush would facilitate collaboration on projects of critical importance to the growth and sustainability of NSW.
"The NSW Government is excited to work alongside Professor Bush and looks forward to collaborating on innovative solutions to support our primary industry sectors," Dr Wright said.
Professor Bush is a specialist in the area of soil science, soil water interactions and is the founding Director of Southern Cross GeoScience - a Special Research Centre of Southern Cross University. He has published over 200 scientific reports and in the past 5 years has won in excess of $6 million dollars of competitive funding to support his research.
Professor Bush commences as Global Innovation Chair at the International Centre for Balanced Land Use in January.
