Queen's birthday honours
UON researchers and educators have been recognised in the 2014 Queen's Birthday Honours List.
Conjoint Professor Gregory Leigh was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to the deaf and hard of hearing community, through education, research, public policy development, and specialist services. Professor Leigh is Director of Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC) Renwick Centre – which operates in affiliation with the University of Newcastle – and is Conjoint Professor of Special Education and Disability Studies in the School of Education.
Professor Alan Rosen was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to medicine in the field of mental health as a psychiatrist and clinician, to national health service reform, and to professional organisations. Professor Rosen is a current Visiting Consultant Psychiatrist at the University of Newcastle's Centre for Rural and Remote Mental Health.
Emeritus Professor Anthony Smith was named a member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his service to medicine as a clinical pharmacologist. An Emeritus Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at the University since 1997, he has made significant contributions to the health and medicine fields. His efforts include working with the World Health Organisation (WHO) for more than 20 years, in a bid to help improve the quality of national medicines policies in developing countries.
An accomplished author, Professor Smith's work has been published in more than 160 research papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He has also been heavily involved in a wide range of boards and councils dedicated to the regulation and quality use of medicines, including the National Prescribing Service, Australasian Society of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacologists and Toxicologists and the Complementary Medicines Evaluation Committee.
Adjunct Professor Robert Gordon Whittaker was named a member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to the building and construction industry as a leader and educator. Professor Whittaker has been a Member of the University's Industry Advisory Board for the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment since 2006.
Professor Peter Joseph Fletcher was named a member of the Order of Australia (AM) forsignificant service to cardiovascular medicine as a clinician and administrator, and to heart health programs and medical education. Since 2007, he has been Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University and Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine between 1991 and 2007.
Dr Cameron Henderson received the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to medicine as a general practitioner in the Manilla region. Dr Henderson is a Conjoint Lecturer with the University's School of Medicine and Public Health.
Dr Tomas Kron received the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to medicine, and to research and education. He was a Conjoint Associate Professor with the University's Department of Physics from 1998 to 2009.
Professor Warwick Bruce Giles received the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to medicine, particularly in the field of maternal fetal medicine, and to professional associations. He was a Conjoint Professor in Reproductive Medicine with the University's Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences from 1999 to 2007.
