Responding to a recognised need for highly qualified midwives on the Mid North Coast, UON Port Macquarie, together with the Mid North Coast Local Health Network, expanded its program offering to include the Bachelor of Midwifery in 2012.

Today seven midwifery students will don their caps and gowns for their graduation ceremony, marking the completion of a three-year degree and the beginning of a rewarding career that will make a positive contribution to healthcare for the Mid North Coast community.

UON Vice-Chancellor, Professor Caroline McMillen, congratulated the midwifery students, along with another 54 graduates, on completing their degrees through hard work and dedication.

"Improving access to world-class tertiary education opportunities and meeting the changing workforce needs of the Mid North Coast region, in partnership with TAFE NSW - North Coast Institute and the local community, is the aim of UON Port Macquarie," Professor McMillen said.

"We are proud to be delivering excellence in education and contributing to building the skills capacity of the Mid North Coast region with our graduates working in local hospitals, health services and schools."

The midwifery cohort will be joined at the graduation ceremony by 22 Bachelor of Nursing students, 31 Bachelor of Teaching (Primary)/Bachelor of Arts students and one Open Foundation pathway student.

Since UON Port Macquarie's establishment in 2004, more than 220 nurses and 200 primary school teachers have completed their programs through the multi-sector campus with TAFE NSW - North Coast Institute, accessing first-rate tertiary education in their region.

The majority of UON graduates have secured professional roles within Mid North Coast hospitals and schools, helping to meet the growing need for qualified professionals in the local workforce.

UON Port Macquarie will welcome 100 new students to the campus in 2015. TAFE also offers a range of Advanced Diplomas, Diplomas and Certificates that provide pathways to tertiary study.
