New Colombo Plan Scholars
Three of UON's best and brightest undergraduates have been awarded prestigious scholarships under the Australian Government's New Colombo Plan to study in the Asia Pacific region.
Jesse Nolan, Cherie Colyer-Morris and Hayley Ovenden are three of 40 students who will benefit from the signature initiative of the Australian Government, which aims to lift knowledge of the Indo–Pacific in Australia and strengthen people-to-people and institutional relationships.
University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor, Professor Caroline McMillen, congratulated the UON New Colombo Plan scholars, and said the valuable opportunity to study at leading universities in the Asia Pacific region would help to give them a global edge.
"The Australian Government has identified the great need for future generations of Australian graduates to be 'Asia-literate', with an emphasis on building cultural literacy and the capacity to speak an Asian language.
"Our New Colombo Plan scholars have a wonderful opportunity to study at leading universities in the region, participate in short-term work placements and gain industry experience, while learning about another culture.
"With this opportunity, our Fellows are equipped to go on and be leaders in their fields, taking their New Colombo Plan scholarship experience with them."
The scholars, chosen based on academic excellence and community leadership skills, will each receive up to $67,000 to undertake study and an internship and/or mentorship in one of four pilot destinations – Indonesia, Japan, Singapore or Hong Kong.
The University of Newcastle New Colombo Plan Fellows are:
- Mr Jesse Nolan, who is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical), will begin six months study at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, this August.
- Ms Cherie Colyer-Morris who is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management will commence six months study at National University, Singapore, from January 2015.
- Ms Hayley Ovenden, who is undertaking a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil), will begin six months study at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, from January 2015.
