National University Chancellor's Council Conference held in Newcastle
As part of the University of Newcastle's (UON) 50th anniversary celebrations, Chancellors from 25 universities from across Australia met today for the first University Chancellor's Council Conference to be held in Newcastle.
Hosted by UON's Chancellor Paul Jeans, the conference was another significant event for the University in its 50th year and an opportunity to showcase the remarkable impact UON has had in the region and the globe.
The Chancellor Paul Jeans said the University was extremely honoured and pleased to host the event.
"Welcoming Chancellors from all corners of Australia to our world-class University provides us with the unique chance to highlight what the University, its staff, students and alumni, has contributed and achieved in 50 short years," said Mr Jeans.
"We are proud to show how through the delivery of excellence in education, research and innovation, we are recognised as an institution that is making its mark on the world stage.
"We are also proud to highlight how this commitment to excellence is matched by our strong dedication to equity, Indigenous higher education and transforming cities and their regions."
On arrival last night, the Chancellors attended a Civic Reception hosted by the Lord Mayor and were entertained by Echology, University's distinguished choral ensemble.
Today the Chancellors met to discuss issues of importance to the higher education sector and take a guided tour of the University campus including the University Gallery and the Wollotuka Institute.
This year UON's renowned Wollotuka Institute received Australia's first World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium (WINHEC) accreditation, recognised for its 30 years of delivering sector-leading outcomes in Indigenous higher education.
As part of its 50th year, the University has also recently hosted an International Forum on Universities: Transforming Cities and their Regions, become Australia's newest 'United Nations City' and training hub for the Asia-Pacific region for global studies into disaster risk reduction and, in April, welcomed Chris Buck, the Academy Award winning animator, screenwriter and director of Disney's Frozen, to speak as part of the Disruptive Innovation Works lecture series.
