Celebrating the key role the University’s School of Nursing and Midwifery plays within the Port Macquarie community, the event will exhibit an array of world-class research projects underway at the University. It will also feature a New Professor’s Talk from the newly appointed Joint Chair, Professor of Evidence Based Nursing, Leigh Kinsman.

Professor Kinsman, who is jointly appointed by the University of Newcastle and Mid North Coast Local Health District, will discuss the importance of bringing together University and Local Health District resourcing to fast-track research outcomes from bench to bedside.

“We have world-class nurse researchers within the University of Newcastle, some based in Port Macquarie, and a high quality of healthcare in this region. A strong collaboration between health researchers and the health district means we can more effectively harness the energy of both,” Professor Kinsman said.

“Ultimately, we’re working toward ensuring research is translated quickly and effectively in order to achieve the best possible patient outcomes. I am honoured to be given this opportunity to bring together the best of both worlds of research and healthcare in this health district.”

Joining the University of Newcastle and Mid North Coast Local Health District from his most recent position at the University of Tasmania, where he successfully held a similar role, Professor Kinsman’s impressive career has spanned critical care and cardiac rehabilitation as well as clinical education in research roles around the world.

“I see this role bringing the University and local health services closer together as one which will add value to the fantastic work already happening on the ground, and something which can be applied globally,” Professor Kinsman said.

Dean of UON’s School of Nursing and Midwifery, Professor Sally Chan, said the University was focused on building strong partnerships to deliver results in the region.

“Working closely with our partners in the Mid North Coast Local Health District, TAFE NSW and local schools, we strive to deliver health and education programs to improve health outcomes and well-being within the local region,” Professor Chan said.

“We are delighted to introduce Professor Leigh Kinsman in this key role. His global expertise will be of great benefit translating the ground-breaking work happening at the University and encouraging a spotlight on the successes happening on the Mid North Coast.”

Director, Nursing, Midwifery and Workforce of Mid North Coast Local Health District, Ms Vicki Simpson, added that the partnership with the University was a welcome and exciting opportunity.

“We are thrilled to further support our clinicians in research, improve our patients’ experiences and improve health outcomes for our communities,” Ms Simpson said.

The Port Macquarie Health Showcase will be held between 1pm – 4pm on Friday, 21 September in the main foyer of the Glasshouse, Port Macquarie. The event is open to the local community.
