Does Dr know best? The role of patients in cancer care decisions

Wednesday, 31 October 2018

After a cancer diagnosis, a patient will deal with many doctors: from GPs, to oncologists – but they may not ever meet the doctor whose research impacts their treatment and diagnosis - the researcher.

Those doors are being opened with a public seminar at HMRI tonight which is set to explore the range of roles in cancer care: from doctors to patients.

A panel discussion will focus on conversations around personalised medicine, patient-centred care, the doctor’s perspective and the logistics of delivering the best cancer treatments. It will consider the role of the patient - from the laboratory, where their biology is examined, to the treatment room, where their voice is heard.

On the day, people will hear from a community member and cancer survivor, two medical oncologists and two cancer biology researchers.

“This event provides an important avenue for doctors, including cancer researchers and clinicians, to engage with the community they treat and to discuss a topic that affects them all,” Dr Judith Weidenhofer, cancer researcher and chair of the HCRA Community Engagement Committee said.

“There are all different kinds of doctors and all contribute to cancer treatment. Cancer patients need to know how all these Doctors work together for their care,” Dr Weidenhofer said.

Hunter Cancer Research Alliance (HCRA) is a collective of researchers from those working in laboratory settings at microscopic levels and in clinical settings all the way to researchers finding the best ways to turn discoveries into practice.

HCRA is working to promote the excellence of cancer research in the Hunter and ultimately improve cancer patient outcomes in our region and beyond.
