Children experience a taste of University life
Local school students will experience a taste of university life, exploring a variety of fields including nursing, engineering, cartoon drawing and psychology at the CU on Campus experiential learning day.
Hosted as part of the Children's University Newcastle initiative, the event is one of a series of opportunities aimed at encouraging children between the ages of seven and 14 to be curious learners.
Children’s University Newcastle Program Coordinator, Selina Darney, said CU on Campus day offered a valuable opportunity for students and their parents, carers and families to visit campus and share the learning experience.
“The program is designed to encourage life-long learning by linking children and their families with the vast array of future possibilities and educational opportunities, which is key to enabling informed choice.
“The University of Newcastle is one of only a handful of universities offering this program in Australia, and the only in New South Wales, so we are proud to be leading the way in promoting and fostering the educational development of the community.”
Attendees will experience a series of presentations and hands-on workshops presented by the University and local organisations. Activities are designed to showcase the diversity of education opportunities available outside the constraints of the school-based curriculum.
Spread over three days at the Callaghan campus, from 2 July to 4 July, the presentations and workshops will be conducted by University lecturers, students and industry professionals such as Director of Toonworld, Mike Wheeler, who will present a cartoon workshop.
Students will also tour the 2NUR radio station, The Forum Health and Fitness Centre and teaching and learning spaces in architecture, drama, psychology, accounting and chemistry.
Since launching in 2016, the Children’s University Newcastle program has quadrupled in size - over 1,200 students and their families will attend CU on Campus day this year, with opportunities extended to students across the Hunter, Mid-North Coast and Central Coast.
Families participating in the event are encouraged to use #seeUONcampus on social media to promote the initiative.
