Charged for Electric vehicle festival
The atmosphere in Newcastle is buzzing ahead of this weekend's Hunter Valley Electric Vehicle Festival, hosted by UON's Tom Farrell Institute for the Environment.
Aimed at encouraging fun and innovative sustainable transport solutions, the festival supports the uptake and development of electric vehicle industries.
From bicycles to buses, electric vehicles of all shapes and sizes will be showcased at the Cameron Park Newcastle Kart Raceway, on 16-17 August. Saturday's festivities will highlight the new wave of clean energy cars entering the market, while on Sunday creators of homemade electric vehicles will compete for $9000 worth of prizes.
Tom Farrell Institute for the Environment Director, Professor Tim Roberts, said the exciting event would serve as a chance to drive Australia towards the forefront of clean energy innovation.
"Electric vehicles are a key technology in making our cities and towns nicer and more prosperous places to live," Professor Roberts said.
"Our annual festival has generated a new wave of electricians, inventors and entrepreneurs to help us move away from petrol and diesel and ensure we build a sustainable transport system for the future."
In another festival highlight, UON Vice-Chancellor, Professor Caroline McMillen, will jump on a mobility scooter and go head-to-head with other prominent Hunter Valley figures in the Celebrity Drag Race.
Festival-goers will have the chance to test-drive an electric car and ride an electric bicycle or Segway, with science shows and information sessions also running throughout the weekend.
