How could higher education support the successful transition from a resource-based economy to a knowledge-based economy?

CAMP Summit in Sydney takes on Innovation in Education Challenge

This is the challenge being tackled by young leaders and innovators from China and Australia in a ThinkTank led by University of Newcastle at the China Australia Millennial Project (CAMP) Summit in Sydney this week.
As global economies transition away from resource-based industries, strategic investment by governments across the world, particularly in Asia, has been directed to building the capacity of universities as drivers of economic growth, productivity and development.

The challenge for higher education is to keep ahead of the needs of students in a world of constant change, and where future-proofing education has become critical.
CAMP is a world-first bilateral incubator bringing together top young leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs from China with their Australian peers.

UON Director of Creative Innovation and ThinkTank Industry Lead, Jeff Julian, said the young leaders were looking at the traditional role that higher education has held in the past and the challenge for the sector to innovate to remain a driving force as knowledge-based economies were emerging.

"The young leaders in the UON education and innovation ThinkTank are looking at many solutions to the challenge including the role of collaboration in higher education across disciplines and borders, which will be key to moving forward."

CAMP's objective is to foster mutual cultural understanding and provide the 130 participating delegates a professional development program to stretch their creative problem solving and innovation skills. The University of Newcastle Education in Innovation ThinkTank is one of 13 hosted by the CAMP project. ThinkTank participants will come together for the inaugural CAMP Summit at Sydney Town Hall from June 1 - 5 to provide their creative solutions to challenges facing both countries.

CAMP's Gala Dinner on Friday, 5 June will showcase the best insights, projects and young talent to emerge from the Summit as delegates pitch their co-created new ideas to a room of venture capitalists, sponsors, impact investors and the smartest and savviest people from the business community .

CAMP's top four ThinkTanks will be flown to Beijing in August to compete in a final pitchoff in front of venture capitalists from Silicon Valley and China for a chance to win RMB 1 million.
