Australia Day Honours 2016
The University of Newcastle congratulates and celebrates all Australians named in this year's Australia Day Honours List. In particular, we recognise members of our University community who received honours.
These exceptional Australians include:
Mr John Cunningham OAM, for service to medicine and the promotion of immunisation. Mr Cunningham graduated with a Master of Clinical Epidemiology in 2010.
Professor Jim Denham, OAM for service to medicine and medical research. Distinguished clinical researcher focused on cancer treatments, and Conjoint Professor in the School of Medicine and Public Health.
Mr Geoffrey Greenfell OAM for service to the community of the Central Coast, and to youth. Mr Greenfell graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture in 1977.
Professor Susan Groundwater-Smith AM for significant service to education as an academic and researcher, as an advocate for teacher professional learning and as a mentor. Convenor of the Coalition of Knowledge Building Schools and Conjoint Professor in the School of Education.
Mr Geoffrey Hindmarsh OAM, for service to the community of Newcastle. Mr Hindmarsh graduated with a Bachelor of Design (Architecture) in 1986.
Emeritus Professor Kevin McConkey AM, for services to tertiary education administration and to the field of psychology. Former Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic (2006-9) and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic and Global Relations (2009-13).
Dr William O'Reilly AM, for significant services to dentistry, particularly through leadership roles with professional associations, to education and as a practitioner. Senior leader in the dental profession and Conjoint Associate Professor, School of Health Sciences.
Mr Allan Thompson OAM, former Acting Assistant Commissioner in the NSW Police Force, for service to the communities of the Hunter and the Central Coast. Mr Thompson graduated with an Associate Diploma in Police Studies in 1987.
Mrs Patricia Wetton OAM, for service to people with a disability, and the community. Mrs Wetton graduated with a Master of Special Education in 2005.
The University of Newcastle is proud to be part of the journey each of these remarkable Australians has made.
