An impressive creation to mark the 40th year finale
Internationally renowned soprano and University of Newcastle (UON) alumna, Miriam Allan, will join the Newcastle University Choir for their final performance of 2017, marking a prestigious finale to their impressive 40th year.
Ms Allan will join acclaimed soloists, tenor Paul McMahon and baritone David Greco with a choir of 120 voices to perform Joseph Haydn’s The Creation.
“I am thrilled to be joining the Newcastle University Choir for this special performance of Creation. It’s a joy to be making music not only with the choir, but with the many friends who will be on stage – the other wonderful soloists, those in the orchestra and of course, with my Dad, who will be conducting,” Ms Allan said. “I’m delighted to be able to help the choir celebrate their 40th anniversary.”
Comprised largely of UON alumni, the Newcastle University Choir’s performance will be accompanied by an orchestra of 32 selected musicians and conducted by the choir’s artistic director, Dr Christopher Allan, at 3pm on Sunday 10 December at the University of Newcastle’s Great Hall.
Born in Newcastle, Miriam Allan has been based in England since 2003. She has been a soloist with leading orchestral and choral organisations all over the world, including Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists, London Baroque (UK), Les Arts Florissants (France), Auckland Philharmonia (New Zealand), Concerto Copenhagen (Denmark), Il Fondamento (Belgium), Gewandhaus Kammerchor, Leipzig Kammerorchester, Concerto Köln, ChorWerk Ruhr (Germany), Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Chacona and Arcadia (Australia).
Performing regularly with symphony orchestras, chamber music groups and choirs throughout Australia, New Zealand and Asia, tenor Paul McMahon is one of Australia’s exponents of baroque and classical repertoire. Career highlights include Bach’s St John Passion with the ACO, St Matthew Passion under conductor Roy Goodman, Haydn’s The Creation with Richard Hickox. He was a member of The Song Company from 1997 to 2001 and toured throughout Australia, Asia and Europe. An experienced teacher, Paul was a lecturer at the Newcastle Conservatorium from 2005 to 2012.
Baritone David Greco has worked on the cutting edge of the early music movement in Europe, having been engaged by some of the most exceptional ensembles, including Mozart’s The Magic Flute with Freiburg Barokorchester, and Purcell’s Fairy Queen at Glyndebourne Festival Opera with Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. He has toured throughout Europe with The Academy of Ancient Music with Richard Egarr and Amsterdam Baroque Orchestrawith Ton Koopman. 2016 saw David’s debut as a principal artist with Opera Australia in Prokofiev’s The Love of Three Oranges & The Eighth Wonder, and also the Sydney Symphony Orchestrain performances of Mozart’s Missa Brevis.
