A passion for helping evolves into a career of helping
With a background working in the community service sector, Ella Reed identified an opportunity to bolster her clinical experience with theoretical knowledge. This led her to pursue a Bachelor of Social Science.
“I have always been really interested in working with people so I was drawn to this degree in particular as an opportunity to keep learning and build on that,” she said.
In her first year of study she founded her own volunteer-based community project - ‘Wings and Strings’, aimed at sourcing donations of feminine hygiene items for women experiencing homelessness, domestic violence or financial hardship in Newcastle and the Hunter.
Reflecting on her time at the University of Newcastle, Ella said she particularly enjoyed the diverse offering of Aboriginal studies subjects and working with the Wollotuka Institute.
“The University’s teaching and academic staff have been an amazing support and offered such a depth and breadth of knowledge,” she said.
Ella has relocated to Melbourne to commence her career working for Relationships Australia on the community corrections program.
