Researcher weighs in on flood management in Bangladesh
Associate Professor Salim Momtaz, from the School of Environmental and Life Sciences has been interviewed by the most circulated Bangla newspaper in Bangladesh - Prothom Alo - on the ongoing flood in Bangladesh.
Professor Momtaz has suggested Bangladesh's issue with flooding stems from an inability to “combine capabilities” and coordinate effectively.
He also pointed to the lack of laws and strict implementation prohibiting the construction of infrastructure which obstructs the natural
flow of a river, as another factor which is compounding the flooding in Bangladesh.
Professor Momtaz has also noted the difficulties of trying to address flooding in the midst of a global pandemic, something the World Health organisation is yet to advise on.
We have seen huge participation of people in relief and rescue works during (the) bush fires in Australia. In Bangladesh, the government should engage general people and volunteers in tackling the natural disaster.
The authorities should ensure that people can come out to help others. Otherwise, sufferings of people will only increase."
