Hub for Medical Students Opens at Maitland Hospital
Medical students at Maitland Hospital now have a designated space to meet and study following the opening of the Health and Medicine Student Hub.
The hub is located within the hospital and includes a tutorial room, study area, work area for Allied Health students, common room and offices for staff members.
Director of the Clinical School Professor Aiden Foy said it is fantastic medical students now have a welcoming space to call their own.
"The new facility will help Maitland Hospital become even more attractive to junior doctors, who are based there as part of the University of Newcastle's Joint Medical Program," Professor Foy said.
"The hub is the result of a fantastic partnership between the University of Newcastle and Maitland Hospital which have both worked hard to make it a reality."
The University's Dean of Medicine, Professor Ian Symonds said this facility will greatly benefit students in the Joint Medical Program by allowing them to link into seminars and lectures using the latest technology.
'Many of our students leave their clinical placements to attend lectures at Newcastle University or John Hunter Hospital.
"This facility enables us to video conference student education from other sites saving students valuable travel time and allowing them to get the most out of their clinical placement."
Member for Maitland Robyn Parker said it's great to see the Health and Medicine Student Hub become a reality.
"Work started on the facility last October and it's wonderful to see it completed and being enjoyed by the doctors of the future," Ms Parker said.
Fourth year medical student Sharna Bennett said the space has been a great place to meet with other students.
"It's really warm and very conducive to setting up a good studying habit," Ms Bennett said.
"There's a lovely little common room where we met with other students for study groups, tutorials and presentations. It's a great space for working on team projects."
Media opportunity: Media are invited to the official opening of the Health and Medicine Student Hub, level five of the Health Services Unit building at Maitland Hospital at 11am on Friday May 2.
