Associate Professor Amy Maguire on understanding the human rights issues of the Covid-19 pandemic
Law School academic helps to shape public understanding regarding human rights issues during the pandemic.
Associate Professor Amy Maguire has been tracking the human rights implications of the coronavirus pandemic and of the emergency governmental powers being rolled out in response. Along with her colleague, Dr Bin Li, Associate Professor Maguire made an early contribution to public awareness of the Australian government’s powers under the Biosecurity Act in a recent article on The Conversation.
Associate Professor Maguire was later interviewed on ABC TV’s News Breakfast program to explore the implications of these powers for civil liberties.
Associate Professor Maguire has since been interviewed by ABC Radio Sydney and by SBS News regarding these issues.
Associate Professor Maguire is drafting a journal article relating to the human rights impacts of the pandemic and has been invited to join a plenary panel at the Australian and New Zealand Society of International Law conference, to be held in December in Canberra.
