Green Week is turning the spotlight on sustainability

Tuesday, 1 May 2018

UON’s award-winning Green Week is back for 2018 with a raft of exciting events and environmentally-friendly initiatives.

Green Week

With a focus on sustainability, Green Week is a time to challenge yourself to bring your own coffee cup. Not only will you get a discount from some of our coffee vendors on campus, you're saving money and helping reduce the estimated 3 billion coffee cups going straight into landfill each year in Australia! Find out which vendors are giving a discount here.

The same goes for bringing a reusable bottle. You can fill up at one of our drinking stations and reduce the impact of plastic bottles incorrectly disposed of in landfill. Find out where you can fill up your bottle here.

On Monday 7th May, students from NeW Space are invited to enjoy warm and hearty soup made from some of the ingredients in the UON Community Garden whilst planting their own take-home herb pots.

Monday evening Samantha Cross, Director of Cross Connections Consulting, will give a short presentation on soft plastics recycling as she prepares to work with the university to implement a three month trial. We will then screen, A Plastic Ocean, which documents how plastics impact our lives.

Tuesday to Thursday at Callaghan, dedicated e-waste collection stations in Auchmuty Courtyard and outside the Hunter Building will provide students and staff the means to dispose of potentially harmful electronic waste. There will also be designated soft plastics recycling bins across campus. View the bin locations here.

Students are invited to take advantage of the Basic Bike Maintenance workshop on Tuesday, picking up some skills to ensure a smooth and safe ride.

Wednesday will see the Callaghan Community Garden Party blossom with workshops, giveaways, food, and music. Students and staff will be able to learn some interesting ways they can get involved in green initiatives at home, at uni, or within their local community.

On Thursday, students can learn ways to minimise the use of harmful chemicals in their cleaning routine with a Sustainable Cleaning workshop.

Finally UON Green Week wraps up on Friday travelling to Sydney where there will be a City Gardening workshop run by Cameron Little from Sustainability Systems and Coffee Cup Seedling workshop as well as free food.
