The University of Newcastle has officially launched its Environmental Sustainability Plan 2019-2025.

Prioritising our planet

The plan is a roadmap to operating in a sector leading, environmentally sustainable way, with several of the initiatives already in full swing. The University will switch to 100% renewable energy from 1 January 2020, reducing the institution’s carbon emissions by 75%.

The plan outlines priority actions across the breadth of the climate challenge including energy, water, waste, biodiversity, design and transport. It also includes details of sustainable investment, procurement and engagement – as well as governance and compliance.

“In addition to sustainable operations, we have some of the best and brightest minds in the world working here as researchers and educators in fields that will hold the solutions to climate change,” the Vice-Chancellor Professor Zelinsky AO said.

“Our strategic planning process has identified “Next generation resources” as a research and education focus from 2020 which will allow us to build on the outstanding work we are already doing in this space”.
