Huxley Library Updates
Our beloved Huxley Library, which houses the Indigenous Collection, Curriculum Resource Collection, and collections that support health, education, and arts disciplines will be relocating to Auchmuty Library with the closure of the Hunter building. Huxley Library has been a huge part of our University of Newcastle Library services over the years, supporting the success of our students, researchers, and academics.
Huxley Library closed for the last time on 5pm on the 16th December 2020. The collections, library staff, and services have now moved to their new home in the Auchmuty Library on the Shortland side of Callaghan Campus. This move presents us with an exciting opportunity to consolidate collections and services on the Callaghan campus into one Library.
Upgrades to spaces across the Auchmuty Library are commencing, starting in December, and continuing into 2021. We are excited to begin the transformation of our study spaces.
The University Librarian, Coral Black, described the transition as a significant “turning point” towards the future.
“The collections and services which have played a vital role supporting the education, health and fine arts subjects for decades will be fully integrated into our Auchmuty location, bringing increased convenience for our students and staff. The upgrades of the Auchmuty Library space will provide a fantastic study environment, increased technology and will allow a more cross-disciplinary environment to flourish,” she said.
Temporary Room Closures at Auchmuty Library
There will be some disruptions to room L313 (Reading Room 3 Group study lounge) from Wednesday, January 13th with the removal of old furniture and set up of new furnishings, including electrical work.
Access to this group area will be restricted, however, there will still be a path into the silent Law Collection.
Click & Collect service
We are now providing Click and Collect service for patrons to access Huxley items during the relocation.
For previous Huxley items, you will see the option on the record to "Request".
Simply follow the prompts and pick up your item when you are notified via email.
From request to pick up, the turnaround time is 24hours.
All requested items will be picked up from Auchmuty, City, or Ourimbah libraries.
If you need to return any borrowed items to Huxley after the closure date please take them to one of our other Library locations.
Key collection locations
The Huxley Library traditionally housed the Indigenous Collection and the Curriculum Resource Collection.
These collections have been relocated to the Auchmuty Library. The Indigenous Collection can be found on Level 3 in L313, near the Law Reading Room. The CRC has been relocated to L322, next to the Carers and Kids Study Room and the GLAMX Lab.
