The Language Centre at the University of Newcastle (Callaghan campus) is an official IELTS test centre. IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, assesses the language ability of candidates who want to study or work where English is the language of communication.

IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English.

The test covers the four macro language skills - listening, reading, writing and speaking.

There are two IELTS Test Modules: the Academic Module and the General Training Module.

The IELTS Academic Module is recommended for candidates who need to meet the English language requirements for academic purposes.

The IELTS General Training Module is suitable for candidates who need the IELTS test for non-academic purposes.

UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI)
The UK government has specific requirements for IELTS test takers wishing to enter the UK for Visa purposes. IELTS tests for UK visa applications can only be taken on specific dates at selected centres in Australia.  The University of Newcastle is not a UKVI test Centre.  For further information please click here.

Applications for the IELTS test can be made Online OR in Person at the Language Centre IELTS office. IELTS candidates applying in person will apply online at the Language Centre computers in the foyer.

Apply Online/Pay Online

  • You must have a clear & legible scanned copy of your current valid passport to upload when applying. The copy you upload must be of the page(s) with your photo, name, date of birth, passport number, and expiry date.
  • You must pay the $340 test fee by credit card (or Visa/Mastercard debit card) online
  • Please select your required date and module carefully, transfers/cancellations will not be accepted if you select the wrong module or date unless 5 weeks written notice is given and a $60 administrative fee will apply.

  • You must pay the $340 test fee by credit card (or Visa/Mastercard debit card), Bank Cheque or Australian Money Order. The Bank Cheque and Australia Money Order must be made payable to the University of Newcastle.


  • If you don’t have a passport for ID to sit the test, contact the IELTS team on 02 4921 7183 or email so they can assist.
  • Payment must be made within 48 hours of registering online.

The charge for the IELTS test is $340

Online applications will only be confirmed after payment has been made (either online or offline).

Payment can be made online only by credit card (excluding American Express & DINERS) or by Visa/Mastercard debit card.

Offline payments can be made by bank cheque or Australian Money Order (available from any Australia Post) and made payable to the University of Newcastle.

Are you READY for the test?

IELTS results will be available for collection on the 13th day after the test, from 11am. Please bring your passport for ID. Provisional online results are available after 5pm on the IELTS Australia website, 13 days after each test. To preview your test results, click here. From October 2017 on the IELTS Online Results Portal, you will now see a table with an explanation of your scores and advice for improvement.

NOTE: Online provisional results are not considered formal advice of results. The University of Newcastle IELTS Test Centre will still issue Test Report Form (TRF) Certificates and will post them to you on the 13th day after the test. Results will be mailed to the address stated on your online application form. Results will not be given out by phone or email.

If you wish to have your IELTS test result reviewed, you may apply for an Enquiry on Results within six weeks of your test date. Enquiry on Results can be submitted in person at the University of Newcastle IELTS Counter. Enquiry on Results cannot be submitted online.


An Enquiry on Results (EOR) costs $176. Should your band score increase, the cost will be refunded in full and a new Test Report Form will be issued.

Please complete the Enquiry on Results Form and payment form below. Payment may be made at the University Of Newcastle IELTS Office by the submission of the EOR forms and original Test Result or these forms may be posted. You can also pay by Bank Cheque or Australia Money Order. Bank Cheques / Australia Money Orders should be made payable to the University of Newcastle.

NOTE Your original Test Result Form must be lodged along with your EOR and Payment Form. It can take up to three weeks before your result may be known. These results will be posted to the address provided on the Enquiry on Results Form.

What if I need to postpone or cancel my application?
If you postpone or cancel your application more than 5 weeks before the test date, you will receive a refund or be transferred to your chosen date. Cancellations will be charged an $85 administrative fee. Transfer will be charged a $60 administrative fee. If your Request for Transfer has been APPROVED by the IELTS Office, follow the steps below to pay.

  1. Click here to pay $60 Transfer fee
  2. Email your receipt of payment to (You will receive email confirmation of SUCCESSFUL TRANSFER from the IELTS office)
  3. Print/save a copy of your Confirmation of Transfer email for your records.

If you postpone or cancel within 5 weeks of the test date, you will be charged the full fee unless you have a medical reason. Please note a 25% administrative charge applies to all approved refunds. Please download and complete the Refund/Transfer request form.

What if I am absent or sick on the test day?
If you are away on the test day with no prior notice, you will lose your full fee. However, if you provide a medical certificate within 5 days of the test date, you will receive a refund.
