English Australia Innovation Award

Director Accepting Innovation Award

The University of Newcastle Language Centre is excited to announce that we have received the 2014 'Award for Innovation' at the annual English Australia Conference in Melbourne, recognising the centres innovative approach to English language training for our diverse cohort of international students.

The Award for Innovation recognises the ongoing effort of all our staff to provide a holistic approach to language education and student support at the University of Newcastle. The award was specifically in recognition of the Student Experience programs introduced by the centre in response to international student feedback seeking greater interaction with Australian students and the local community.

The program has been developed to provide a range of practical opportunities for meaningful engagement with other International and Australian students, as well as members of the local community through activities that would be complimentary to students study and also provide a social aspect to ensure all students felt welcome and part of our University and local community.

Such programs include Speed Conversation classes, a Social Friendship program as well as Work Experience and Volunteering opportunities for International students to meet new friends, get involved in community activities, while the whole time having the opportunity to practice their English skills and develop confidence in themselves and life in Australia.

Such activities within the program range from visiting the local Newcastle Museum or Farmers Markets with Australian University students, to Volunteering at the Newcastle Maritime Festival, Sydney New Years Eve Festival and with long time partner, the Hunter Wetlands Centre.

Director of the English Language and Foundation Studies Centre, Associate Professor Seamus Fagan expressed his satisfaction with the award - "Whilst high standards of teaching and extensive student support services remain critical to the success of students studying English, the strong need for innovative holistic programs, such as our Student Experience Program at our centre have never been more apparent, and I am delighted that the hard work of our staff has been formally recognised with this award"
