Rebecca (Bec) has been flexing her creative flair for more than a decade. With a passion for the creative arts and an undergraduate degree in communication, Bec kickstarted her career in marketing where she went on to promote some of the biggest concerts and theatre tours through to managing national brands across a number of industries.

Bec went from strength-to-strength starting her career in an advertising agency. This is where she was able to thrive, working alongside like-minded creatives and developing strategic creative solutions to meet business needs.

She decided to move to Newcastle from Sydney, and it was here where she had a relaxed lifestyle and the thirst for a new challenge, deciding to study a Master of Marketing.

“I thought it would help to validate my “hands-on” experience in the field and believed it would help take my career to the next level – which it did!” Bec said.

“The Master of Marketing was very complementary to my role at the time and helped forge a new career path upon my completion, giving me the confidence to start my own business as a specialist marketing consultant to the arts and creative industries.

As well as getting the prestigious degree and the sense of accomplishment that comes with that, I made many connections in the local business community through the overlap of Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs and gained confidence in my own skills and abilities.”

Bec has gone onto successfully execute a number of community events throughout Newcastle, and recently joined the City of Newcastle as a Marketing Specialist.

When asked about her time studying, Bec liked the location and ability to work around her full workload. As classes were based at the Newcastle City campus close to where she worked, Bec found the location and the structure of the program to suit her, with afternoon and evening classes offered.

With a trimester schedule, Bec found it easier to accommodate the busy and quiet periods of her life by adjusting her study load. “There were sacrifices to be made, there is no quick and easy solution – it does take hard work and dedication, but the pay-off is worth it.”

For Bec, her time at the University of Newcastle didn’t stop when completing her degree. She found great value in her post-study experiences.

“I have enjoyed the opportunity to return as an Alumna in the capacity of invitee, contractor, guest tutor and advocate over the years since finishing my postgraduate studies.”
