Fiona Chiu, a University of Newcastle Alumnus from Hong Kong, graduated in 2020 with a Bachelor of Social Science, majoring in Criminology.

Throughout her degree, Fiona thoroughly enjoyed the teaching style of her lecturers in Australia and embraced the differences to that of her home country Hong Kong.

“The learning experience in the University of Newcastle is much different from my past learning experience in Hong Kong. In the University of Newcastle, the lecturer will encourage students to challenge presented ideas and respect to students’ ideas.”

Building on the theory she learnt in classes and applying that to her professional development, Fiona sees her Social Science degree and study experience in Australia, as a gateway to opening up many future working opportunities.

“The Social Science degree offers me various working opportunities, such as Youth Worker, Family Worker, Community Support Worker etc. I want to be a Child Protection Worker in the future, utilising the knowledge that I learned from the University to support children and other disadvantaged groups.”
