Kanishk Kumar (MBA, 2011; Master of Marketing, 2011) is a business development and market entry consulting professional, with a reputation for helping businesses grow.

He has advised organisations across a wide range of sectors and specialises in education and sports. With interests in both India and Australia, Kanishk was awarded the Excellence in Service Award by Austrade for his work developing an innovative Transnational Education Strategy for the Australian Vocational Education & Training Sector.

Embracing an international mindset and encountering all types of cultures was a major deciding factor in Kanishk’s decision to study with Newcastle, not to mention the University’s rank and reputation. Studying at Newcastle pushed him out of his comfort zone by introducing him to students from various cultural backgrounds which, in turn, broadened his horizons.

By contributing his time to extra-curricular activities, such as the Newcastle University Postgraduate Students’ Association, Academic Senate, the Teaching and Learning Committee and the Faculty Board, Kanishk gained firsthand experience of how long-term visions are built and board rooms function. He especially appreciated two of his lecturers who he still considers his mentors. “Some of their lectures are still very fresh in my mind and considering it has been almost 10 years since I would have attended those, it says a lot about their passion for teaching. I also worked at the university library and the memories with those colleagues, I will always cherish.”

Kanishk learned a lot about Australian life through the friendships he forged. From games of lawn bowls to backyard barbeques, he embraced the relaxed, beach lifestyle that Newcastle is known for. By sharing his own cultural traditions in return, he created lifelong bonds. He even had Australian friends make the trip to India to attend his wedding. “It's a special relationship that I will cherish forever.”

Since his graduation and entry into the business sector, Kanishk has had many achievements including successfully winning a competitive Australian Government grant worth AUD 13,000 among 75+ applications to promote women-led Indian start-ups and launch them in Australia. He also propelled the India growth for Catapult Sports, an Australian sports technology company, a story that was highlighted in Australian government’s India Economic Strategy report.

“I love the University of Newcastle,” says Kanishk, “because of the city and its people.”
