Pave your own pathway with postgrad studies
When Hugh decided to take on postgraduate study, it was with 30+ year’s professional experience in the mining and underground civil construction industries under his belt.
After completing a Graduate Certificate in Applied Finance at the University of Newcastle in 2017, Hugh experienced the benefits of postgraduate studies first hand.
So, he enrolled in the Master of Studies program and jumped in feet first.
“Postgraduate study supports my future involvement in the workforce at a senior management capacity. It also enables me to research the latest technical innovations, industry trends, and workplace practices,” said Hugh.
Hugh says he was drawn to the program as it allowed him to specialise in the areas that are most beneficial to his career progression.
“I chose the Master of Studies as it enabled me to combine further studies in management and work health and safety. I also have the flexibility of choosing elective subjects that match my interests such as disaster risk reduction.
“The skills I am developing are in demand, as the mining workplace becomes more technically demanding and safety conscious.
“The program has also allowed me to develop better research and communication skills.”
The program has a global focus, and Hugh says that studying amongst such a diverse cohort of students was another drawcard.
“One of my management courses had enrolments from 17 different countries.
“I have enjoyed studying with international students and learning from their different perspectives and experiences.”
The Master of Studies is designed to be extremely flexible, allowing Hugh to balance work, life and study.
“Studying online works well because I can access the University website from home, from work or even when I am travelling, yet still have access to teaching staff when required.
“And the IT and library facilities are excellent, which enables me to access academic research from all over the world.
“Plus, the online learning environment allows me to easily collaborate with other students and academic staff.”

Hugh Gordon is a current student at the University of Newcastle studying a Master of Studies.
