As a 2020 graduate of the Master of Professional Psychology, Catherine has had a long interest in mental health.

“I have been keen to be a part of the mental health movement which I have always believed played a significant importance in the healthcare industry. This, along with my passion for helping others, motivated my pathway towards becoming a registered practitioner under the Australian Psychology Board,” Catherine said.

Catherine completed her Honours Degree in Business and Psychological Science at Monash University Malaysia before commencing the one-year Master of Professional Psychology at The University of Newcastle.

Her choice to study at Newcastle was easy as both her uncle and brother had commended the University for the quality of education and memorable experiences during their own studies there.

In addition to her familial connection to the University, Catherine was also supported by the International Alumni Family and Friends Scholarship which helped to ease her financial concerns. “It has eased the burdens of attaining financial support for my education and living expenses while living abroad,” Catherine said.

This unique scholarship gives international students the chance to follow in the footsteps of university alumni and experience all that life has to offer in Newcastle. When a prospective student is successfully referred by an alum, they receive both monetary support as well as access to exclusive professional development opportunities.

Looking back on her studies at the University of Newcastle, Catherine genuinely enjoyed the overall experience of the program. “Not only is it an accredited course, but it also provides the practical training and theoretical knowledge I seek to grow and be prepared for the workforce,” she said.

Catherine also noted how important a positive classroom culture was in encouraging her learning and success. “I was initially surprised to be in a small cohort but found that it was beneficial as the learning experience was more individualised and thus exceeded my expectations.”

“It was also easier to get to know and build friendships with my classmates. My lecturers and supervisors were very skilled in their areas of expertise and created a classroom culture that was encouraging for our learning,” Catherine said.

Despite the difficulties faced during Covid in 2020, Catherine forged ahead with the support of academic staff. “I really appreciate their efforts in ensuring the continuation of our virtual learning which was coupled with easy online access to resources”.

Catherine explained that this support extended to include guidance during her placement at The University of Newcastle Psychology Clinic. This opportunity gave her access to professional facilities that supported practical work integrated learning.

Catherine is now undertaking her one-year internship as a provisional psychologist at private practices in Sydney. This role allows Catherine to provide therapy to patients of all ages and backgrounds and includes the extra pressures of providing mental health support during a pandemic.

“I have definitely found it challenging with the on and off COVID situation, but I also feel like I have gained invaluable experience from having my internship through a pandemic.

“I feel that the pandemic is a wake-up call for many of us that mental health is as much of a priority as other areas of one's health,” she said.

When her internship year is complete, Catherine hopes to continue working in private practice to build confidence amongst the public in seeking support for their mental health. She specifically wants to support those who fear the stigma of needing help, due to cultural reservations.
