Candace is a graduate of the Bachelor of Design (Architecture) and Master of Architecture programs at the University of Newcastle. Since she was young, she had a growing interest in drafting up designs and plans, based on the needs of the people around her.

Holding particular interest in being able to design places for people of all abilities, she now works on a lot of hospitality projects, that range from minor additions in local pubs to high-end renovations for registered clubs.

“One of the major things I am passionate about in architecture is universal access – designing places for people of all abilities to access and enjoy. I have a sibling with a disability, so this is an issue very close to my heart,” Candace said.

Originally from Dubbo, a regional town in NSW, Candance had her eyes set on Newcastle due to the high number of career opportunities that the city offers, whilst still benefiting from the support of a tight-knit community. The “bush campus” theme of the Callaghan Campus also contributed to her interest in studying at the University of Newcastle.

Whilst completing her studies at the University, Candace enjoyed the dynamic problem-solving approach to teaching, and took advantage of the University’s 24 hour-access Architecture Studios, where she was able to opt for a more hands-on learning approach to her studies.

“It was so rewarding to study alongside my peers in the same physical space and seeing all the different designs we could all come up with to the same assignment. Studying and producing work so closely with my peers helped set me up for working with people who had different approaches and ideas,” she said.

In 2017, Candace was also involved with out(fit), which is a non-profit organisation founded by School of Architecture and Built Environment (SABE) at the University of Newcastle. As part of her work with out(fit), Candace worked on renovating the outdoor space of a local women’s shelter.

Candace said, “it remains one of the most rewarding projects I have ever worked on. It was truly inspiring to be able see the direct impact that we had with our design, and that feeling was amplified knowing that we were empowered to build it ourselves.”

Now working with EJE as a Graduate of Architecture, Candace takes prides in being able to work very closely with her clients and builders. In addition to working on hospitality venues, she also works on other projects, like childcare centres, community clubhouses and motels.

“We generally work with clients right from the beginning of concept development, all the way to construction phase. Seeing the final built result is so rewarding when you’ve been involved in the process from the beginning.”
