For Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Honours) and Bachelor of Mathematics student Jodie, the idea of a career as an engineer was ignited during her primary school days – stirred on by her love for everything maths and science.

Fast forward to 2018 and she is now in the final semester of her combined degree which she hopes to use to pursue PhD studies that will benefit the medical industry. She was also awarded the inaugural Catherine and Peter Tay High Achiever Engineering Undergraduate Scholarship.

“As I went through high school, the idea of being an engineer started to become more definite. I chose this degree because I enjoyed maths and physics and this degree catered to both interests,” said Jodie.

While Jodie’s experience with electronics was limited when she first started, her studies have opened up opportunities for her to explore new skills to become a better engineer.

“Having come into this degree with little electronics knowledge or practical experience, I used to be very nervous going into a laboratory – not knowing how to use the instruments and being scared of doing something wrong,” said Jodie.

“It’s great to realise how much I have learnt during my studies.”

Jodie put her learning into practice during a six-month exchange to Singapore. Not only did she study a semester at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), she also completed an internship with global technology, defence and engineering group ST Electronics.

“My internship involved working with a group that was developing a fiber-based distributed acoustic sensing system.

“My main task consisted of designing an interface to monitor and control the laser which involved programming the communication protocol between devices.

“This was a great experience and I now have connections within both industry and the university that will be valuable for my career,” added Jodie.

Looking to the future, Jodie plans on fine-tuning her knowledge with PhD studies.

“Next year, I hope to begin a PhD which will be based on Bayesian estimation. Using this statistical technique, I hope to be able to develop better predictions and treatments for rehabilitation patients,” concluded Jodie.
